unknown file format

Hello,
This is my first time here. Can anybody help me:
I use w2k
i have installed divx_311alpha.exe
I use BS player version 0.84

After opening the,,,.avi file I get the message Unknown file format

Who knows this problem

perhaps this file is encoded with divx 4??

Try this:

Uninstall the alpha 3.11

Get a codec-pack (kristal codec pack, or nimo-codec pack) and install this

Does it work ????????? .....................Problem solved
NOT ?

Get the divx 4.12 codec and install it (answer NO when it asks if divx4.12 also has to play your 3.11 moviez)

Get the SMR-patch and install
Does it work??????????..................Problem solved
NOT ?

Then i'm out of ideas (actually i have one more but i save that for if this all doesn'rt work )
