LG RPC Manager - will it lock?

I have the LG DRD-8160 and have been looking about for a way of making it region-free. I've come across lots of posts about the RPC Manager, which sounds like it works fine. I'm just a little concerned about the fact that in many posts the possiblity of it suddenly not working keeps reappearing.

Does anyone know if this actually happens or is it just a myth, as i've seen in a couple of previous posts that people have been using it fine for months.

Obviously i don't want to end up not being able to watch half of my DVD collection if it suddenly locks in a certain region.

Any help or advice in resolving this question would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers.

I really don't know if that's only a myth (I have a 8120 and it works really fine) . If you have Windows XP the chances of problems are higher, and you should be sure to install the ASPI drivers for XP/Windows 2000 (otherwise the rpcman.exe won't work at all).
I don't believe the RPCman will lock your hardware. In worst cases it just won't work. I'd do the following: first of all I would reset the area code (using the "r2d2" password). If that works out, then you'll probably have still 5 changes. In case it doesn't, things are going to be the same as they were before and you won't have changed your region code.
I suppose that it's not possible to be out of any risk in those operations, but the solution for LG is quite safe as it doesn't involve flashing the bios, which personally I woudn't have the courage to do as I am a complete ignorant in flashing bios...

    Good Luck

Hey dbento, thanks for your response - i've actually been using the RPC manager for a few weeks now, as i decided like you say, that at worst i just won't be able to reset the counter, but the drive will still work.

The only thing is i have just upgraded to XP (dammit!) and have not yet needed to reset it-

Do you kno where i can get hold of the ASPI drivers for XP/Windows 2000 or are they just on the CD??

      Many thanks.

        Hi!

I don't remember quite well where I got them, but I took a look around and I suppose you may download the same aspi drivers I have in:

Among many items there to download, you'll find the entire aspi drivers package for XP. Just install them following the .txt instructions that come with the .zip file and everything should be all right.

If you have any problems or if the files are corrupted, just please let me know.

        Good Luck!

Thanks a lot - i downloaded the drivers package from that link you gave and followed the instructions in the txt file. The first thing it did was check to see if i already had aspi installed. It reported that 'ASPI is properly installed and is fully operational'.

But at least now i know for sure, so thanks again for the link.

          Cheers dbento, you're a star!
