Copying movie from hard drive to dvd

I want to know how can I copy movies from my hard drive in avi format to dvd format to play on my home dvd player? Is it possible?

I believe it can be done with the following steps:
1. Encode the AVI format into DVD-compliant mpeg2 format. For this I believe there are free downloadable programs. This, depending on your computer, can be extremely time-consuming.
2. Use a DVD authoring program to burn your video onto DVD (such as Ulead DVD movie factory)
