Blank Monitor & Can't access anything

I just purchased a new computer 2 months ago Pent4 1.2or so gb, winxp. I had just finished using DVD shrink to compress some video files, left the room for a few minutes and came back to a blank screen. The monitor is working, when I press reset I get the ASUS info and then nothing else. Always blank. I tried the old monitor that I'm using now and same thing. Could someone help please? Thanks so much.

Do you, perchance, have your computer set to either go into a "sleep mode" or a black screen screensaver?

"The monitor is working, when I press reset I get the ASUS info and then nothing else. Always blank."

Are you saying your PC is just not doing a thing after a "reset"? It's possible that you may have coincidentally lost some component, like your video card, for example.

as a robotics tech working in a semi-conductor fab - for some reason and nobody knows why the monitor will go blank and one of the reasons and the first thing you should try is your connection at the back of the moitor - they can look ok - if you have one that plugs in, push it in and check and if not follow th the 2 cords down to your computer and power supply and make sure there tight, next if that doesn't solve your problem, don't reset the computer - do a cold boot (all power off), wait 60 sec - you can do 10 or 30 but 60sec is better and bring back up - maybe this will help - Byron

I do have the computer and monitor set to go into sleep mode but they always come awake again when I press a key or move the mouse. Not this time. I will try Bryon's suggestion although I did do a cold boot but for only 15 seconds or so. Could it have something to do with the sleep mode? Thanks for all the help.

bugpwr has a good point. Always check your connections. Though, I'm not sure if you'd see the bios splash if it was the monitor cord.
Something else you might try if all your connections are good and tight, is to power down, turn your pc off at the power supply and physically remove the power cord for about 20 seconds. reverse the process and see if it boots. This actually worked for me as suggested by service support for an 3 year old Medion PC.

try pressing alt+f4 once you notice this problem, if this takes you out of blank screen mode please email me ASAP along with all info of what you just recently did prior to this occuring. With sony releasing rootkits so they can hack into your computer I am wondering if they would have the ability to put a black screen over everything once they notice the program dvdshrink running.?
