4-pass VBR or One-pass VBR w/ Analysis + unused space?

I know that with one-pass vbr the file sizes are not guaranteed, but is it still okay to use it when a given movie comes out to 3.91GB with one-pass and 4.31 on 4-pass? I watched both of them and they look pretty much the same (not to say that my eyes are any good! ) I didn't see anything that i would complain about. I was using Rebuilder 0.93.2 pro beta and CCE SP 2.67.0.27. Any info would be great. thanks. puraido.

    oh yeah, but One-Pass saves a LOT of time. (3 hrs vs 5.5, on P4 2.66 + 1024 MB DDR 2100)

i personally do not use opv but that may be a different matter

if you dont spot any differences then 4 passes might be a waste of time in your case

i use rebuilder + procoder2 in almost any case and that way i will have a 2pass which provides me with the best quality

      hey, UncasMS!
Thanks for your help last time I was wondering, with procoder 2, how long does it take for you to encode the average dvd-9 rip and what CPU and memory do you use? my friend has procoder2, but when i was trying it, it took FOREVER, like 10 hours!! I think he has the same CPU as me or a 2.8. Thanks again. puraido.

two pass allows for more efficient bitrate distribution ie more for high action/complex scenes. I myself use 1 pass alot of the time for low action movies. controversial talk is if you use a constant bitrate of say 8000k you will be using plenty of bitrate for all scenes plus the encoding time will be much less than using a 2 pass vbr with a max of 8000k video bitrate. If the movie is of a length that will allow it to fit on one dvd with this method. You state you use 4 pass. IMO even in high action/complex movies anything over 3 passes is a waste of time. I rarely go over 2 pass vbr.

from memory the last backups i did took between 150 - 300 minutes (pure encoding time) depending on the amount of extra material - i will check the times when i'll be back home

my encoding machine is an athlon64 3000+ @3500 (venice core) with 1gb infinion (no speed demon)

          ++++

the encoding times varied from 157 (a 110 min movie without extras) to 301 min (90 min movie + 75 min extra material)

thanks guys.. i'm gonna try cce one pass vbr w/ analysis vs 2 pass vbr (or should i go 3?) on an 8 gig dvd (forgot the length of it) and see what happens i'll check it out on my friends procoder too, if i have any patience left thanks again. puraido.

take a small sample video of app 2 minutes with different scenes and try different settings. this is what I do. saves alot of time. and see what you like. then use the settings on your project

                some words on encoding speed:

                same title different methods:

                procoder2 (mastering quality/slowest) - encoding 237 min

                hc 016 testrelease2 best/slowest - encoding 216 min
                hc 016 testrelease2 best/slowest OPV - encoding 111 min

                cce 270 3 passes - encoding 183 min
added: cce 270 2 passes Matrix AngelVeryLow - 123 min
cce 270 OPV (default idct) - encoding 67 min

all IDCTs compared in terms of speed:

So you are only seeing about a half hour difference between HC and CCE... that's interesting. The difference is much greater on my Athlon XP.

[Edit] Whoops I missed the extra pass. That explains it.

indeed, i used 3 passes for cce and hc is 2

                    should have posted this line:
                    cce 270 2 passes Matrix AngelVeryLow - 123 min
