Dvd-r Or Dvd+r

What exactly is the difference between the 2? Is one better than the other, why are DVD-R's cheaper? Is is a question of quality? Ive recently just started burning dvd's and using DVD+R's, would it be bad for me to try DVD-R's?? Thanks.

another thing to consider is the player you are using. for instance, my toshiba won't play +media, so dvd+r's are out of the question for me.

@aicjacket5 - it won't hurt to try -r (make sure your burner and players can handle them) IMO +r's have the advantage over -r's due to the fact they can be bitset/booktyped to DVD-ROM.

@LT - if ya wanna use +r's use the LiteOn booktype135.exe for setting the booktype to DVD-ROM. I have been sticking mostly to +r's for that reason.

i know i could, but i like the negative r discs i use. the damn player should be able to read anything, next time i need to buy one i 'd like to get one that supports divx also.

do you know of any players that can play divx, but it isn't "advertised" on the box--or manual? it would be sweet if it could magicaly play one, i haven't tried though.

When the forum started the dvd nomenclature they didn't plan on
a dvd+R format.

Just because the competetors came up with a later format and decided to call
it plus R/RW..........................

After weeks of research, [ I'm a relenless bird dog when I'm going to buy electronics]
I bought a Philips DVP-642 due to all the users comments. The box even boasted, " If it's on a disc, this will play it".

Divx, 16x dvd-, 16x+, all RW, all CD media, jpg's, the whole 9 yards.....
and for the small price of $64.00.
Seems also that plus or minus will play on everyone I know that has a DVD player that is couple yrs old or less.
They have no troubles playing any movies I burn for them.

[I know someone is going to say well that doesn't help people who have dvd players over 3-4yrs old..
My answer to that:
If you can afford 60 bucks to fill up your gas guzzlng SUV, you sure as heck can spring for a new DVD player for same cost.
And It will last lot longer than that tank of gas......

The Philips DVP 642 plays it all so far.
My boss and a co- worker bought 1 at Circut city month ago..
same results....

i'll keep it in mind this fall as i may get another player...sick of pal to ntsc conversions. my toshiba can't read dvd pal
