    Adding subtitles to an avi?

I have an avi file, that came with subtitles, however I don't know how to attach the subtitle file to the video. The extension of the subtitle is '.idx' and '.sub'.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

download & install "vobsub" from http://www.doom9.org , then make sure the sub and idx files have the same name as the avi file. then play your file

      Sweet that worked.

Are there any DVD authoring programs that can use subtitles in them?

I have used NeroVision Express, but that doesn't have support for subtitles.

Yeah, I've tried putting it through Virtual Dub, but I get this error message.

And when I do encode the video with Subs, it is really out of synch with the sound, and the subtitles.

i recommend you try "virtualdubmod" instead, it will ask you the same question, and just click 'no'...

hi, im very new to this, but i was able to get most of this to work. I have an xvid avi file with ssa subtitle file, i was able to hardcode the ssa file into the video using virtualdub, and i want to save it as one complete avi file to burn it on VCD, however the anticipated capacity of the filtered file would be over 800,000 mb! I dont know what im doing wrong...someone please help.

its likely you have not selected a codec, which means you are outputting an 'uncompressed avi'', which is huge.

re-encode with an mpeg-4 codec such as xvid, by following the links in my previous posts

hmmmm, when i opened the video file i got this:
"Virtualdub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file..."
"virtualdub will rewrite the audio header with standard CBR values..."
"This may introduce up to 23721 ms of skew from the video stream"
"(bitrate: 125.7 (plus or minus)* 16.4 kbps))

the above are just fractions of the message, it tells me how to fix it if i find it unacceptable, which i do because the audio starts a tad faster than the video, it says i have to decompress the entire audio stream into an uncompressed wave file and then recompress with a constant bitrate encoder. all of this i do not understand how to do.

*the plus minus part is a written interpretation of the symbol, which is a plus sign on top of a minus sign.

                          thanks

hmmm, i also find that if i put audio to full processing mode, then it fixes the problem, but will this mess with the final filtered piece?

no, 'full processing mode' just means you are encoding the audio to another format. you should encode to 'mp3' (at least 128kbps).
