I'm new and completely lost.

Hi everyone!,

Forgive my jumping in here out of the blue.

I've been lurking her for a few months, and have a problem trying to copy a 3 DVD set I bought a few years ago. Recently I bought a stack of real TDK "Write On" DVD-R's, that seem to be causing a bigger problem then I had before using Staples, DVD+R's. I don't have the experience to determine if it's a problem with my PC, the burner or the disks. The IOmagic burner is new and using the current firmware.

The PC is Win Me, w/20gb free and an Athlon 900mzh processor, and is used only for email. Probably not the best thing to use, but I don't want to replace it just for this after just buying a high end laptop. I am using Decrypter and Recode, and with a lower rate of success, (I think), since using the TDK disks.

The first of three DVD's in the set copied on the 2nd try. The second on the 1st try, and the third, I can't get a good copy after 7-8 tries.

I'm hoping for some insight from you experienced users. I saved the last two failed log files from Recode.

will be slow but will do the job. are you having the problem ripping the dvd's to your hard drive or burning them ? you can check here in the dvd writer section for media compatibility www.videohelp.com

Yes, I thought the hardware would be okay but slow.

They rip 90%+ of the time with Decrypter, the writing is the thing. Sometimes Recode using the same source will get 1/3rd, or almost all the way before it fails. Other times, immediately after the analyzing finishes and the writing starts. There doesn't seem to be any science to it.

I did check the videohelp site, but didn't know how to check the media code for compatibility. A friend using a Plexstor swears by the same TDK's. I called IOmagic today and they had nothing bad to say about TDK and their burner. Right now I switched back to DVD Shrink only for a test. Past disks written with it, proved to be much less reliable on my Panasonic carousel, although they played fine on my APEX.

@ATF - I only have a 733 Mhz PIII with 458MB ram and rip and burn ok.

What errors are you getting when you rip? Post the DVD Decrypter log. If they are CRC errors try cleaning the DVD's.

What speed are you trying to burn at? Is your DMA ok? Post the nero Log.

Posting the logs will enable others to see what is going on.

Just to be clear, after 7-8 failures with Recode, DVD Shrink just burned the same source file to DVD on the first try. It worked perfectly in my hard to please Panasonic player. So, I assume there is no problem with my PC hardware, the burner, or the media, but something out of whack with Recode. I tried every option I could think of in Recode including sacrifices to the God Nero before each attempt and subsequent failure.

You've got way too many old drivers on your system, it needs a thorough cleaning. I also don't understand this line

It looks like your optical drives are on the Primary Controller, this makes no sense to me, the hard drive should be on the Primary with the Optical drives on the Secondary.

The media has widely mixed reports at VideoHelp

Would need to do some digging to find out who actually made the compaq burner you are using and if there are 3rd party firmware updates available.

I think, "Recorder: Version: A188 - HA 0 TA 0 - 6.6.0.15" , A188 is the firmware version of the burner, 6.6.0.15 is the version of Recode.

There are two HD's,

-the Primary master HD (w/2 partitions), and the primary slave is a DVD reader only.
-the secondary master HD and the new DVD burner on the other line.

They were long ago set up this way for CD copies with Nero to burn on the fly. It was necessary to set them up on separate lines for the highest flow through rate.

Generally I've been using the primary HD and the secondary slave , (DVD burner) with Decrypter and Recode, so it is as you suggest it should be.

This is the burner, it's 3rd party, not Compaq.

Added: A quick Google search shows that I/O Magic IDVD16DD could be a rebadged BTC 1016IM, or BenQ-1620. Have you run Nero Info tool? Perhaps that can tell you what it actually is.

I pulled the PC apart, and you're correct. The master primary HD and the burner as the slave were on the same cable. Fortunately there was enough excess cable in the box to swap cables only at the connectors and I was done in about 15 seconds.

I have Recode running something else right now, it seems the read speed seemed a bit faster with Decrypter, so I'm optimistic. I might ruin another blank, but one of the reasons DVD Shrink might have worked on that file, was that it is noticeably slower. Will check Nero Info tool a bit later. It's late and I'm quickly going into stupid mode again.

Shrink successfully wrote out another disk that failed under Recode using the same media.

There appears to be no further ID on the drive using Info tool.

I think a reasonable guess is that there's a problem with Recode only.

I have tried Recode 2 several times for various purposes, and it has never failed to disappoint me, with unexpected results and sometimes spectacular crashes.

It's an attractive GUI, but it doesn't work!

I think some have said that it is better than Shrink at video-based material or something--I don't care, I've given-up on it.

I think Nero has alot of compatability problems with other drivers. It seems the only recourse if you plan on burning with Nero is to do a complete uninstall, run the Nero Cleaner, then re-install. That way it takes precedence over whatever other burning programs/drivers may be in your system.

One thing I noticed immediately after having made a few backups with Recode, was when I added an external HD, Nero would lock up the PC. I had to turn off the HD, start Nero and turn the HD back on again. I also had some difficulty getting a driver from WD, and ended up using some generic Microsoft or something. Since then I've pulled the external drive off the system.

I believe there's a thread here about Recode vs. Shrink, but after taking a quick look for it, I see there's a lot on the subject although I can't find the thread I was thinking of. Mainly, it's the fact that Recode is a lot faster then Shrink, and that it will be supported in the future. I think most disks that were successful using Recode took less then 45 minutes, while Shrink takes about 3x that long.
