Very slow DIVX/XVID playback

I just don't get it. I have a 500MHZ AMD k6-2 with 128MB RAMa and 20GB HDD. And eversince I did a fresh install of WinME, I can't watch DIVX/XVID movies anymore cos they are like slow motion.
I tried installing different FFDSHOW versions, XVID, DIVX codecs, AC3 for audio and it's the same result everytime.
For player I tried BSPLAYER, Media Player Clasic, Windows Media player and it's all the same.

What can I do???

what OS did you have before you did the winme install? so they worked perfectly before the clean install? are you playing from the hard disk or a cd/dvd?

1. uninstall all codec packs, install 'ffdshow' (october 13) from here http://www.aziendeassociate.it/cd.asp?dir=/ffdshow

2. get latest directx

3. get latest graphics card drivers

4. make sure there are no programs running in the background that may be hogging the CPU

5. play with media player classic

6. make sure DMA is enabled (probably not the cause, but is possible if the files are at a high bitrate)

how big are these files? what resolution/bitrate? dos this happen with all xvid/divx files? what about dvd's?

B4 I had Win98FE installed.
I'm using DX 7.1, and have already tried FFDSHOW from 20050803, and 20041012. And then uninstalled and again installed XVID codecs and again uninstalled and tried DIVX codec and again uninstalled, and installed DIVX TOTAL PACK and again uninstalled it.
What am trying to say here is that I don't thing it's codec related. Since everycodec I've tried gave me the same SLOW MOTION effect.
And it was the same with PLAYERS(bsplayer, MPC,...)

I tried with DMA and without.
It doesn't matter if I play them from harddrive or CD-ROM or even from a network card. The files vary from sizes of 175-700MB and codecs - XVID / DIVX

There are no programs running in the background. Have latest drivers 4 my video and sound. At least to my knowledge.Since it's hard to find drivers for such an old PC.

Do U thing if I upgraded to DX8 or 9 that it would help?

your initial post made it seem like you had it working on winME previously. winME is known to be the worst operating system ever released by microsoft. your PC is hugely underpowered for it, so IMO win98 is all you should run on such an old system.

it might help to install latest graphics card drivers and DX9, you should always keep directx updated.

Thought so too. So I installed Win98 SE and will see how it goes.

btw. I know that WinME is the worst OS of all time, well 3.1 was even worse, but the person for whom this computer is wanted WinME. So now he will just have to live with Win98SE, IMHO WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY BETTER THAN ME

if he/she just likes the newer interface (like somebody i used to know), there are programs that can make win98 look like ME. but i'd say to go with win2k at least, or better yet get a new pc

Totally agree. I just hate MS for pulling the mainstream support for Win2k. It was such a great OS.

ANyways, reinstalled Win98 SE. Installed FFDSHOW and latest AC3Filter. And now movies with AC3 sound will be slow motion. If I disable the sound all works ok.
IS the machine to slow to handle AC3 sound?

it shouldn't be. try uninstalling ac3filter, and set ffdshow to play ac3 audio...

if ffdshow is already playing ac3 audio, do the opposite and disable it in 'audio configuration', so that ac3filter is playing it

got latest audio drivers? did you install latest directx?

I am running win98SEi have AMD 55mhz 320mb ram dont have the latest direct x because i have been told only new pc's should have them for old pcs r not suitable for the requirements.

i cant runn XVID divx is fine but not xvid, like the HDTV release and a ton of more. if i play it any other player then VLC then the motion is very slow, and so is sond. in vlc it plays ok when there isnt much movement in the video(lol) i cant watch any fight scenes etc... BUT BUT if i disable the audio in VLC player then the video is PERFECt but then i have no sound!
i have ffdshow, k-lite codec pack, i tried removing one by one and tried every combination of codecs, i even trien them singley.
i tried to disable ac3 sound like said in previous, n i went to controll panel n clicked on ac3 filter, but i get an error n i cant open the program. anyways thats not the problem, becuase VLC is the only player that doesnt require any type of codecs its built in the player. from my point of veiw best player ever, no hassels.
I am a movie fanatic, n it really pisses me off when i download an xvid n i cant watch it, i know b4 i download it that 90% chances r that i wont b able to watch it properly, but what can i do, im a fanatic i gota try.
i dont understand y it doesnt work, every other thing works except good quality xvids, and mostly all the movies are good quality xvids because every1 nowadays are wanting better n better quality. :'( too bad for me.

so some1 please help me out, i have had this problem for a long tiime, n i just gave up, back i got my energy back, n i hate deleting the movies without watching it. how can i fix this video prblem with the vlc player????

i have a AMD 555mhz proccessor, 320 mb ram. 8 mb intergrated video card. windows 98. and direct x 7 i think. and i have all the lastest drivers(none showed up so far in the windows update). i have real player, bsplayer, windows media player, classic player, vlc player(best). I have ac3 filter, ffdshow, n k-lite codec pack. i have removed all the codecs last night after trying the fourCC.

last night after posting here i tried something, i tried this program called fourCC, i read about it from this site

read about the trouble shooting xvid problem, n he says to change the 2nd box detail from "XVID" to "divx" or change it through regedit, well the funny thing is that the file he said to change in reedit, isnt even there in my pc. u think that might b the problem??? so then i had to get the fourCC n do it that way, i did it, n it still made no difference.
can 1 of you guys look at that site, n c if he is saying the right thing to do??

i really dont know about any other specs that i can give you? please let me know if i missed out something n ill get back to u asap.

I'd suggest using mplayer. For best results I would suggest running it under linux. Say Ubuntu or Suse since they are easy to install/use.

500/550MHz might simply not be enough to decode XviD if it is of a high res with bframes, qpel, GMC, etc. and has AC3 audio.

Still mplayer requires about the least resources of any player. In the future though CoreCodec should be releasing an MPEG-4 decoder that is even more efficient than libavcodec. At least going by their AVC decoder which is more more efficient than libavcodec.

look i dont know y the problem is high resolution xvid? because when i disable the audio in vlc the video plays amazingly perfect, no matter how high the xvid resoultion is. so i think its the audio problem. any tips on what i can do? maybe i should change the ac3 filter setting?? but i dont know what to change in there. also i dont think ac3 has anything to do with it either cause like i said b4 VLC doesnt use any codecs, the program alread has them all intalled in it. the only reason y i use vlc, is that not ALL avi work bad only the high res ones, but in any other player .avi is slow motion n i cant change that. also if i change the resoultion in properties, n makes it to the lowest one, n change the color bit from 32bit to 256coulors it makes a huge improvment to normal res avi's, but not high res avi.
any tips, questions or comments???
