    .asx streaming video

On my old Win 98 computer, I could play a streaming .asx video online with Windows Media Player 9 (such as one of the archived on http://interactive.creflodollarminis...lyarchives.asp) and fast forward to a later portion of the video with the slide bar at the bottom. Now on new computer, Win XP, Win Media Player 10, this does not work. I can play the .asx video, but sliding the bar to advance the playback, or fast forward, the video stops, goes to the beginning with no audio or video for several minutes. I can immediately stop and restart the video, but no forward or reverse functionality. I have played with all possibilities like installing latest directx, choosing performance options (http, etc).
My current theory on this is that it is an issue with Win Media Player 10 and the latest real player. My neighbor can fast forward with the bar at the bottom, but he has version 9 of WMP, oddly enough on XP. Please help.

    WMP10 sucks. Get 9 here:

I had to search for hours to get the installer after MS pulled it off the Net, but it's back online with me now

Uninstall 10, then install 9. You go to the Control Panel, add/remove programs, then Add/Remove Windows Components, then UNCHECK WMP and click OK. Also check normal programs to make sure there are no "Windows Media Player update"s.

    Hope that helps!
The worst thing MS ever did was release WMP10, hopefully I will help be a cure for that problem

Mirrors are sites that host files (so if I made a program that originated on my site and then you hosted it, your site would be a mirror) other than the original.

I found it on some college's site saying that in order to view the media you needed WMP9, I think it was on page 20 or so of Google

Anyway, my site is faster and more reliable, as I never delete anything

Do you know why Microsoft is saying on their site there is no version 9 for XP? Is the file I am downloading from you something that was available in the past they are pulling for some reason?

They want people to use 10. 10 is a piece of trash. They are promoting their "better" version so they pulled the old one off.

Like I said before, thank God for mirrors

There are 2 reasons why 9 is better, but I think you guys know that already!

                  version 9

Thanks for all the replies! Much appreciated. I'm curious what all you have found better about version 9. I know one thing, you can forward play .asx files. What are the others?

                    1. Media search. 10 has a purchase music tab but you can't search for the free songs and video
                    2. What you said
                    3. Like I said in nubmer 1, 10 doesn't let you search. Instead it has a music video tab. There are not very many choices in there... it sucks. WMP9 lets you search for anything you want, and you can get free songs and videos that way.

I am going ahead with the uninstall of WMP10, and find the Windows Components fine. I am unable to locate what you referred to as "Normal Programs" for removing updates. Please let me know, and thanks.

Well, if your computer did not come with WMP10, it will show a "windows media player update" in the main screen (just click Add/Remove Programs again, that's the main screen)

If it came with WMP10, it won't be there, just use the Windows components screen.

Ok I removed all wmp updates and wmp 10. The error I receive when I click on your .exe is "your computer already has a more recent version of wmp, install will be cancellled". Please help

P.S. This is strange. Unchecked the box in add/remove components to uninstall. When I click on a windows media player icon that is link to a .wmp file, the wmp10 comes up and starts playing the file. The wmp icon had disappeared from the desktop, but obvious the player is still on the machine?

Yeah that's what I thought... it was probably updated. You could (set a System Restore point first!) go to C://Program Files and delete the Windows Media Player folder. That should remove it.
