the format war isn't over, remember beta vs vhs? it would be wise to wait and see which comes out on top. now i don't know much about this HDTV stuff, just the basics....but

the price is ridiculous, the players and movies. plus so few titles available. from what i've seen there are only 15 sony blu-ray titles to choose from right now

a regular dvd with a HD tv looks pretty damn good already. you can't get full blu-ray experience unless you have an HDTV, so people need the player, a new tv and new discs. how many own a HDTV compared to standard? the HDTV's need to come down in price too, that would help. also PS3 will support blu-ray which will further boost sales IMO. microsoft is making a plugin drive too for xbox to support HD DVD also, my money is on sony so far though

backing up i bet will be done easily eventually like it is now (whichever format wins) when more and more get into it. i won't be (hopefully)

    my 2 cents

My thoughts are I won't be purchasing any Blu-Ray discs or burners any time in the immediate future. Too expensive and who needs it. I'm perfectly satisfied with my regular dvds. They will be around for a long time to come. You can still buy VHS recorders and tapes, they haven't been totally phased out yet and dvds have been out for a long time now!

As far as backing them up, well where there is a will there's a way and eventually, just like all the copyright protections, someone will find the way.

Where there is a strong will and desire there will become a day when HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will be able to be ripped. But it certainly will not be as easy as the current CSS protection and ARccOS. Most likely that time table will be driven by the costs of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

From my viewpoint, the DVD people most likely, at this time, are people like the author of RipIt4Me, and his/her driven beta staff. These people and his/her staff have the strong will and desire to make it happen.

I believe we, as DVD fans, should give out support and help to the DVD people who have the expertise to make ripping HD-DVD and Blu-Ray a future reality.

I agree with the other members, blu-ray is not fully supported yet, and there is not enough hardware in the homes to properly view the blu-ray discs anyway. I seriously doubt that any time soon, the current DVD standard will be abandoned. As one member said, VHS is still around and people still buy the machines, otherwise they (manufacturers) would not be making them.

I have the complete Star Trek original television series, all of the movies, Next Generation series, Deep Space 9 series, and Voyager series on DVD, all backed up too, along with about 150 other DVD movies and their backups. I certianly wont toss them into file 13 if blu-ray versions are released, but I would add the blu-ray versions to the collection.

The encryption on both HD-DVD and Blu Ray is totally different to DVD. They won't be popular in the computer for some time (the first Blu Ray drive cannot even play Blu Ray films).

It is not possible to just insert a drive. It also requires a new motherboard and graphics card with HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection). The PC/HD player sends a encrypted signal and the display has to decode it. All this has to be cracked at as well.

With all the requirements they are putting on this blu ray thing I hope it turns into the BetaMax of recordable media and flops.

Does that include HD-DVD as that also requires HDCP?

@nwg - I don'y know a lot about this stuff I jumped on the VCR thing when they first came out and spent boocoo $$$.

I got into DVD recording when I bought my standalone recorder almost 2 years ago to back up aging VHS tapes. I got into PC based DVD backing when I bought my first 8X burner for about $80 and the speed has doubled now and the prices are less than half ~$35. So right now I am happier than a pig in poop

Neither do I. I have only read stuff on the net. I won't be getting into any HD format for years. I started early with DVD back in 1999 (about six months after the start in in the UK). However, I won't be doing the same with HD. I don't even have a HD display. They are not that common over here. The only people with HD is people buying new projectors, Plasma and LCD TV's.

Its really all a marketing ploy to "push" folks into the HD world early so that when they pull that big switch on people, there wont be so many "shock calls" to retailers and service shops and broadcast facilities with people asking why their tv wont pick up anything.

                              I dread that day.

I have begun a little campaign here locally on 2 of the popular tv stations. They run a quick 30 second jit which in each session, I talk about the comming change in how we watch tv and its effects on the viewers. It is helping many understand why the system is changing, and what the viewers need to do to be prepared for that day.

Since the market is pushing in the HD direction, it only makes sense to throw in the little "extras" that come along with HD. This includes blu-ray DVD. It is like having two identical slices of cake on a shelf. One has icing on it, the other doesnt, but both pieces of cake are delicious. Chances favor the cake with the icing that will sell before the one that doesnt. Thus we can think of the blu-ray DVD as the icing on the cake to HD equipment. If someone sees their favorite movie/s on HD DVD, they just might be edged enough to make that big jump and purchase the proper tv to view it as well, or vise versa.

It works either way as far as sales go.
