    mplayer and mencoder

I know that I am lacking a lot of technical this and that, but I cannot figure out even how to install this program much less configure it.

Does anyone know of a good source with step by step instructions? I know it is a ghost on my computer right now and seems to have taken over all my file formats... and perhaps it is interferring with some of the other programs I use.

    Any guidance would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

it's a cli app, not really meant to be user friendly. perhaps MPUI or Mplayer GUI will get you started; there is also VLC, should work just as well

Actually the official GUI works fine on win32 now to. Just compile with the GUI enabled and rename to gmplayer.exe, as for installing... If you are compiling, then just "make install". If you are running some kind of linux distro, then there is probably a package available, so apt-get install mplayer for debian/ubuntu, etc.

For windows, there is generally just an archive file (I pack my builds with 7-zip). No install, just unpack and it doesn't effect any file associations.
