What is the smallest video format to convert to, what killed my PSPV9 and my mp4s

Alright, I'm turning to you guys. I've been using PSP Video9 for a few months to recode my videos on my computer to save HD space. I don't use them on a PSP, I just like the fact that it shrinks the files down to such a small size and keeps the higher resolution at the same time, so I can expand it to full screen without too-much of a loss. I've been shrinking videos from 50% to 75% at nearly the default settings.

So here is the problem, I recently installed some new software on my system to record and edit our bands music videos. The new software installed drivers, encoders/decoders, and video filters that are incompatible with PSP Video 9, all PSP does now is load the file, generate a 0 byte file, and a thumb nail.

I need some kind of suggestion of other applications that works as good as PSPV9, shrink at that 50+% rate in the mini-screen PSP mp4 format, but can still be watched decently on a wide-screen HD monitor. If I can't fix PSPV9, I'll gladly switch to another app. The software I installed recently must stay, so I need a work-around of PSPV9, or a new program for encoding. I know this is long, but your help would be appreciated.

The goal: 50% reduction in file size, limited noticeable loss when viewed on a 23" wide-screen monitor, Zipping and RARing not an option, files must be a ready-to-go video format, ie mp4.

    Many thanks

First, try uninstalling and reinstalling it. That may fix your problem.

If not, then, Magic DVD Ripper is not freeware. Although, there is a custom version with 30-uses trial and discount price ($29.97) for this forum to see if you are satisfied with its performance and quality. - http://www.magicdvdripper.com/downlo...DRipper33d.exe

Works well, I prefer it over PSP 9 actually, does a great job of it and only takes 30 minutes a movie, give or take.

I can't remember if that link is to the older version or the newer one, but search the forums here and you'll see it under Converting/Ripping section.

It's a codec problem, or a filter problem, I've gotten that far. It's just that I do so much on my system... To start with windows is running as a process over Linux. That, and and I've go OSX Tiger running as well. So... Everything worked fine (sorta, for the most part) till I installed the Adobe Production suite. The problem is, I've opened the box, and installed the software, so I can't get a refund, and it cost me nearly $900. So, Adobe stays. lol.
I tried the uninstall and reinstall, in all different orders with both PSPV9 and Adobe, now I can't even load my mp4 files, let alone convert to that format. It would probably take me weeks of nonstop trial and error of pulling and reinstalling each codec, filter, and mask, to find the culprit, which I bet is just one single file somewhere, figures. I really do thank you for the response though. So, two questions, here. First, before I go install yet another video program on my nearly system, that is already going nutz from my trying to kill it,

Does Magic DVD Ripper convert existing files, or just DVD/VCDs.

What is the best format to go with, for a 1:1 pass-through on resolution/frame-rate, while compressing the file to the SMALLEST possible size. I'm willing to give up up to 20% or so quality. I really did like the mp4 files PSPV9 was giving me, but since mp4s are probably out of the question for the near future (or is it just the mp4s from that program?) , what are my other options.

Well, I convert all my DVDs to MP4 format to watch on my PSP while I'm at work on the night shift.
However, my sister has a Treo 650 palm phone. I bought her a 1gb SD card and installed a media player on it (TCPMP). I then use PocketDViXEncoder to convert the DVDs to AVI format and they play very very well on the Treo. I was amazed actually and the file size was less than 200mb, so I was able to put 4 complete movies on the card and still have some room left over for music or anything else she wanted on there.

The reson I tell you this is, you may be able to convert DVDs to AVI format and still have a suitable quality for viewing on your computer, and it'll take up even less space than the MP4 format.

PocketDViXEncoder sounds great for the occasion I convert DVDs. I guess I wasn't clear. I want to take riped files (avi, mpg, mpc, mov, rm, and the like) that I already have, that are like 700mb -1gb files, and shrink them down to 150-200mb files. That is what I was using PSPV9 for till it crocked on me

Sorry about the confusion, and thanks for the continued help.

What is the smallest video format to convert to, what killed my PSPV9 and my mp4s:

I want to take all my existing movies (avi, mp4, wmv, rmv, mpeg, mp2...) and convert them to a single format. Most of my videos are in the 700mb to 1gb range. I was using PSPV9 to convert them all to mp4 but a recent install of an Adobe suite package has blocked my ability to play mp4 videos. I've already tried multiple uninstall and reinstall orders of the Adobe software, PSP Video 9, and my 2 codec packages (ace and Kazza). I can't get my mp4 files to play, or check if my conversions to mp4 are working files.

That said, I would like to know, what is the smallest compression/conversion format in a usable video format (not rar/sit) other than PSPV mp4. And, what software tool can I use (freeware?) to get to that specific format. PSPV9 was going from 700Mb to 250Mb, the best I've seen yet, but like I said, all of a sudden things don't work anymore. I have, over the past month or so installed a few dozen video tools, so if anyone knows something else that may have locked out PSPV9 and my ability to play mp4 files, that would help too.

I'd like to keep my video in its current resolution/frame-rate if possible. I'll be watching them on my computers' 23 inch or 34 inch wide-screen monitors, so tiny postage stamp resolutions are out.

Any ideas anyone? Cynthia maybe an faq I missed?

            Thanks everyone!!!!!

Any chance you could fix the name to the other thread's name, I'm more interested in finding the smallest format and how to get there than anything to do with PSPV9; reasoning the new thread in the first place. but I couldn't del the first post/thread.

Hey everyone, thought I'd put in a bit of a shake-up. I fixed part of my problem. Still can't figure out why things stopped working with PSPV9, but did get SOME of my mp4s working again, and converted others to new mp4 files from their old mp4 files doing 1:1s.
I found This: Jodix Free iPod Video Converter, it does 1:1 in every aspect, and lets you choose different settings for quality/size: http://www.ipod-video-converter.org

New problem, it won't convert broken files. So, now I need a broken video fixer. Any ideas?
I need to convert AVI, AVC, AVM, AMV, RM(V), MPG, MPC, MP2, MPEG, MOV, QT, and a few others. Is there anything out there that will fix a broken video? IE, download missing part of file in middle, VLC player and even BSplayer will play them by jumping the gaps, but can't convert.
                    Thanks everyone.
Oh, and how do I convert "locked" mov files, or unlock them?
