PC restarts in the middle of dvd playback

I have just put together a new system with a AMD AM2 processor 3200 with 1gb DDR2 (667). When first trying to play a dvd in windows media player i was prompted to download a dvd decoder. i searched download.com for a decent program but could not find something for free. I managed to find powerdvd from my last system in my junk software drawer. I installed it an was able to play dvd's in windows media player, but powerdvd would restart the whole system in middle of playback, so i just used WMP. I then decided to install me Nero 6.6 ultra edition so i could use recode 2 to compress video to my hard drive. Backed up a few of my dvd's to my hard drive, but upon trying to play them in WMP got the same system crash as powerdvd. I have since uninstalled nero used clean tool and uninstalled dvd region+css. Last night even after the uninstall i was still crashing, so i let the system rest overnight uninstalled, then reinstalled powerdvd and now playback seems to get better, but windows media player has had to shut down a couple of times, luckily not to the point of a system restart. I have also tried to use dvd shrink on this system, but it causes system to restart also. SO which brings me to my two questions.

DOes anyone know a software setup that will bring me more stability in playback?

Is there any suggestions on how to get recode2 or shrink to run on this system without causing conflicts.

I have had my hardware checked out by a reputable computer repair company and have run spyware and anti-virus checks and neither have given me any clues to why the system is behaving that way. SoFtware seems to be the conflict>

I have an ASUS M2NPV-VM motherboard with on board graphics i belive its the Nvidia Geforce 6150. Dual Vga ouput 6 channel sound Component video out, S video out and A/V out. I could understand if i was trying to game with this card having problems, but for just watching movies? I really think software specifically Nero is the root of this problem. My system is much more stable without it. Playback has been much more stable last few days.
My next step is to reinstall dvd shrink and see if i can get my system and shrink to play nice together.

btw does media player classic have a built in dvd decoder? Windows media player 10 is the most stable playback tool on my system right now, but i will try media player classic if there is some benefit to it. It seems my system needs powerdvd to be installed for WMP to work right. When i use powerdvd it always crashes and i just switch video to WMP and have no problem, until i took off powerdvd off my system and then it starts crashing?

use media player classic. yes it has a built in mpeg2 decoder, however i prefer dscaler5 (noticeably faster at HD res). as for powerdvd, go into config and turn off hardware acceleration, try playing then
