Playback problems of DL copies.

Hi villamanila,

I don't have any exp. with this particular media, but the results seem to be mixed;

equipment: an external USB 2.0 DVD+R DL 16x recorder (PHILIPS ED16DVDS MODEL) connected to a laptop with Windows XP.>>

Lastly, I have seen posts on here stating that Laptop burning can be an "iffy" procedure, (esp.) coupled with an external USB device.

If possible, I would want to burn DL media on a desktop with a known good reliable burner.

I would look in to ImgBurn For DL & Verbatim.

This is typical of cheap media....read on.

To back up my DVD movies on DL Imation 2.4x discs

I would have to agree with soup on this one...as it is, Verbatim seem to be the only ones who have gotten their act together enough to produce quality DL discs.

for software: DVD Decrypter V3.5.4.0, Nero Recode 2

...again, as suggested by soup....Imgburn for DL discs. Rip with DVDFab Decrypter because DVD Decrypter is no longer getting support through updates to keep up with new encryptions. Here is a guide for DVDFab Decrypter. From there you need Imgburn to burn your DL disc, here is a guide for Imgburn.

You are way too agreeable locoeng, you are starting to scare me & it is not even halloween night yet (LOL). One option I might add is to look at RipIt4Me in ISO mode & then ImgBurn.

Thanks Katz. I've been researching the forum and anayzing my copies with some programs. I expect to publish the results which may be of interest on this topic when finished.

So far it seems there is a probability that the external drive may be in the middle of it all. Regards.

Imation are not for you if you want good backups - only Verbatim Dual Layer media, made in Singapore. MKM dye.

With the help of one of Nero�s tools (CD-DVD Speed) which I didn�t know was within that program till a read Blutach�s 22 Feb 2005 post �How to check if your burn is a good one�, I was able to apply its Benchmark and ScanDisc tests on the problematic copies and verify that all of them failed either or mainly both tests.<o

Having found also Blutach�s 7 Apr 2005 post �FAQ: The Golden Rules of Burning, no.7� I removed InCD from my PC (also on my own account, without any known technical reason but just in case, I disable all memory resident programs during the ripping and copying process: fax, DSL, Internet Security and Antivirus, etc. �of course having first physically disconnected DSL and LAN cables!!!).<o

Thanks to the comments of the forumers on my original post �all of whom I deeply thank- I checked into the media quality threads and switched from Imation to Verbatim DL�s MKM dye (you�re right again Blutach, more power to the aussies!).<o

And guess what?: I get flawless copies according CD-DVD Speed tests (around 30 minutes time) even using my USB drive with DVDDecrypter in File Mode and Nero Recode 2 for my DL copies. I do not bother to playback the entire movie anymore for quality check, though Blutach cautioned this is not full guarantee it will play well on every drive. In mine they do.<o

Perhaps I should have guessed the media quality was the main factor �cause the playback problems did not happen with the copied movies which size fitted to a SL disc, because in this case I always used Verbatim 4.7GB discs (2�/disc retail), but I had not yet visited the DigitalIFAQ.com site that in the forum�s �Verbatim quality� heated topic debate was mentioned (so far my short experience points to MickeyBK and Chewy being right).<o

But in Spain, where I live, second and third class DL�s cost around 7� to 12� a piece and Verbatim DL�s can hardly be found. (I think once I saw some at 16� or more per unit). Of course there is a racket behind those prices: the National Corporation of Author�s Copyrights has been officially authorized to tax every blank CD and DVD upon their sale by commercial distributors and if you are pulled over on the road, the police have been known to demand invoiced proof of having paid this tax on the units you use in your car: It�s a complete and mind boggling outrage, but Spain is unfortunately different!!!. Luckily just 2 weeks ago I had the chance of finding a source that sells the Verbatim DL�s MKM dye for under 4� and SL�s MCC dye for around 0,40�. The Gods finally have been kind to me.<o

I was happily using Imation for DL�s in my PC �cause it was the only brand that when copying from my SONY standalone�s HDD recorded movies to its DVD DL recorder, during playback they did not stalled and jumped not only a few frames but up to 2 minutes of movie.<o
