    VirtualDub DivX bitrate question

Ok, I'm using VirtualDub to encode uncompressed AVI into DivX MPEG-4 Fast motion, and Mpeg Layer-3 audio, and I noticed that in the Config screen for the DivX codec, no matter what I set the bitrate to, the filesize and image quality stay the same.

Is this normal, or is VirtualDub not forcing it to a higher quality?

The video looks fine normal, but if I double the size in WMP, it gets REALLY blocky....

that's what I'm trying to fix, really.

    TIA

It's hard to believe that an uncompressed .AVI would be blocky...

Hmm, well, it is, only after encoding DivX 3.11, and then zooming the finished product.

One thing is the fast-motion-codec. It compresses very well and reaches small filesizes, but it reaches it's maximum quality at low bitrates. If you select a higher bitrate it is not able to use it for higher quality. Also it is only usefull for movies with high-action scenes or many dark scenes. For all other films you should use the low-motion-codec. With 2-pass-mode you will reach additional quality at same filesize.

          Ahh, I see....Ok...

So, is there a way to use the 1-pass or 2-pass option in the 3.11 version of DivX? I've only seen it in 5.X, and that doesn't encode properly, there are green blotches everywhere....

Nandub is the only program that allows you to do 2-pass encoding with 3.11. It is basically a modified version of virtualdub with a wealth of encoding options added to it.

i dont suppose owa42 looked at an uncompressed video in wmp but at his final avi.

owa42, use NANDUB for two pass encoding instead of fast motion (which imho would be the worst choice)!

                Ok, I'll bite

I downloaded NanDub 1.0RC2, and it seems much more powerful, but I can't find where to choose 2-pass or any other option, the only option I see is DivX or MPEG4-2

                Thanks for all your patience!

Click on "File -> Two passes" and Nandub will do both passes.

dont forget to stick to some rules/basic settings in nandub!

                      for a 2 cd rip:

my nandub guide is german only, BUT take a look at the screenshots of the nandub settings i consider best for a 2 cd rip!

under 4.4 you will find two screenshots for the first two tabs:
                      divx and bitrate curve.

i leave all other tabs with default values except COMPRESSION LEVELS:

                      here i change the following:
MIN: 2 and MAX: 4 for Keyframe Quality

i have posted this in another thread before
Talk about the AVI file container, and the Divx/Xvid codecs that are most commonly found in AVI files

so dont wonder in case you've come across it.

                        Nice...thanks for the link

I'm not really ripping DVD's to CD's, I'm jsut encoding some short video clips to DivX so I can send 'em to people more easily.

                        Thanks again

well i guess you can judge for yourself that the eletronic-translation does not really produce understandable output.

                            the problem is this:
i wouldnt mind spending some time translating this part of my guide (the rest is available in english), BUT... i am doing PAL not NTSC.

thus i would consider an english version for nandub transcoding inadequate, since i havent got that many ntsc dvds to test the routines and point out a way i consider almost perfect.

and the last thing i would like is another incomplete and crappy guide.

dont get me wrong, i really appreciate your link and the idea you offered. had the outcome been better/understandable i would gladly add this as a link.
this way, however, i'd rather advise people to ignore the 'weird language' and take a look at the two screenshots only, since they actually contain important SBC settings for a decent 2 cd nandub rip.

i could of course simply translate this part and point out that the content is meant for PAL, not NTSC.

on the other hand i'm very busy testing gordianknot with divx 5.02 these days and as i mentionend in another thread before, I AM IMPRESSED so far.

of course i will not write a guide on that because after only some 10 different files to comnpare I dont dare telling other people how to do this or that in gk/divx502.

moreover, a guide can be found at doom9 and of course i dont like 'publishing' other peoples findings as 'my own way' unless i do it differently or disagree to a certain degree (what i did with the nandub part).

i now gk fairly well (didnt go the whole nine yards with it, as gk does NOT allow nandubtranscoding using MS V2 as codec, which was my only choice!) and thus my routine is very much like the one described (surely not INVENTED) at doom9's.

for the time being i can only advise all users, who arent to lazy to make themselves familiar with (possibly) new ways to test GORDIANKNOT 0.26 BETA with DIVX 5.02.

it is faster than nandub using divx3 and spotting differences in terms of sharpness was very very difficult as long as SHARP BICUBIC is selected in avisynth (which of course will slow down the whole process [by some 30-40% in my tests so far].
overall performance concerning smoothness was better in divx5 so far in my tests.

                            give it a try folks!!

i'm not sure where u got the idea that i wanted u to do a ntsc guide, as i live in the uk (a galaxy far far away...) and do mostly pal dvds.

However i think all rippers should experiment. But this is not possible 4 me as i have EXAMS coming up. But after that i'll have 2 months free so you'll know i'll be up to

                              keep it up
