"Illegal Disc" - Nero 7, Windows Vista

    Hello

I have recently upgraded my OS to Windows Vista Ultimate (clean install), kept all my hardware which was working perfectly before.

I found that my previous Nero version (5.5) was not compatible, so i bought a new Version 7.5.9.1 yesterday.

Installed it, wanted to burn data DVD's. No go - "Illegal Disc", in the meantime i have wasted some 10 discs because this f***ing error doesn't go away no matter what i do! Strangely i get an identical error also when using "Ashampoo" which complains something about "Media Error" yet not before wasting the disc by burning it roughly half!

The used burner is a LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-812S.

I have the Nero log here:

Now i've read plenty of posts with identical problems, and always points to DMA errors, i can't see any such item in this log but i checked in the Device Manager and i've got the burner on "UDMA Mode 2" while the DVD drive is on "UDMA Mode 4", whatever that means. At the moment i have the drive as master and the burner as slave like i used to have in Windows XP before, but changing that doesn't make a difference either, already tried.

I already upgraded the firmware of the burner to the latest available version but it didn't help either.

The discs i am using are Princo DVD-R 1-4x, the exact same ones i have been using for over a year with this same burner and never had a single problem with.

I have to add that i can still burn CD's just fine, with the same burner and the same Nero.

What should i do next..? I urgently need to get some stuff of my HDD and onto DVD's.......

    Kind regards.....

there are a few clues that nero doesn't work very well in vista, the log leaves out some information

try imgburn to see if it works

that drive is pretty old, may not be able to burn dvd's anymore

          thanks, but......

          Hello

Thank you very much for the reply and the link, altough it didn't help at all..... let me explain, i'll go rule by-rule:

          1) Never heard of "Verbatim". I live in Thailand, you won't find them here. I used Princo since several years, CD's and DVD's, they are explicitly recommended by the manufacturer of my burner (LiteOn) and i never had a single coaster with them, they are excellent media. As i have no player but play everything in the computer, it wouldn't matter too.

          2) I upgraded the firmware to the latest version already before posting here - it didn't help.

          3) DMA is ON, Mode 2 (according to Device Manager).
          4) I NEVER burn faster than 2x, which is the reason why i prefer these exact media - when i use Princo "1-8x" Nero won't let me select 2x, so i'll stick to these.

          5) Never even knew what "book settings" are and certainly never changed any.

          6) Never even touched a +R disc, always burned the same type of media in the same burner and never had any problem.

          7) Bought this Nero in the shop the very day before, asuming it's the latest version. Found out meantime it's not, but can't get it to update - the link you provided doesn't work either (404 file not found) and from within Nero it shows that there are updates but they won't start downloading. My version is 7.5.9.1, "InCD" is NOT installed (in fact only "SmartStart", "BurningRom" and "BackItUp" are installed).

          8) I do that by putting the just-burned disc into the DVD drive (non-burner) to see if it can read them - if yes, fine. Rarely i get one that runs only in the burner.

          9) Never did that - i write on them with a marker pen only.

          10) I have USB 2.0 ports but my burner is an internal one anyway

As you can see, none of the rules applies to my error. And about the drive, it is a whopping 10 months old (bought it april 2006), is that really too old to burn DVD's? In fact it would still be under warranty if i didn't have sprayed it's front panel right after i bought it to match my custom paint on the computer.

HOWEVER i did change my drive already yesterday, right after posting here! I went and got another LiteOn (they are available with silver front so i don't need to paint again), this one was manufactured last month according to a sticker on it. Put it in, and for good measures reinstalled Nero too.

Burned first DVD - seemingly fine, but it would run only in the burner, the reader drive would not even detect it.

Burned a second one - got "Power calibration error". Restarted PC.

Expected the error to be caused by the material that i wanted to burn - essentially a backup, containing more than 25.000 Files. Did it using "BackItUP" and the DVD came out fine, it complained about different content during verification but it works fine. Then i burned a second such disc, and no errors at all.

Finally burned a last one like the first one (video files on a data DVD) and it too came out without any error and runs just fine on either drive.

So i guess it's working now? Maybe Vista just didn't want to work with the "old" drive, let's see. For the moment i can burn again at least

Oh, and why i use Nero? Because i haven't found a single other software that either lets me allow to adjust the burn speed, doesn't have the difficulcy in usage like Linux command line, and WORKS in Vista! I have Ashampoo and Santa, both installed but neither will burn..... DeepBurner won't even start up (altough it too installed) and "Ultimate CD/DVD Burner" burns but can't set the speed and doesn't even have a bar showing that i aproach the limit of a DVD - the first and only one i tried it burned right over the rim and the disc was destroyed too.

          With kind regards.....

          your Thanh

                      Hello

Now for one, i have downloaded and installed the ImgBurn software. But - it supports only, well, image files? Sorry i am not trying to burn those.... i don't create video DVD's, instead i burn video clips "as they are" on the discs, effectively creating data DVD's - since my computer is my DVD-Player, this is the best arrangement, i get like 6-8 full movies onto one disc (single layer) and can watch them on the connected TV just fine.

About the Princo Media, it almost appears to be the problem, HOWEVER how come that all that started with either 1) Windows Vista or 2) Nero 7.x or 3) the combination of those two?

A little history: I have gooten my first CD-burner in 2001. I tried several types of blank CD media, finding that many of them would become unreadable after some months of storage, the silver coating just started peeling off (i's quite hot in Thailand and i can't keep them "at 25 degrees" if the ambient temperature reaches 35 easily every day- and no, i don't run the airconditioner 24/7 top keep the stupid CD's "live"). So i ended up with Princo because those never failed me, and i have some from late 2001 that still work perfectly.

Last year in april i finally got my first DVD burner, that LiteOn which now failed me. As i was so happy with the Princo CD's, i naturally went on to use Princo DVD's as well, as they have also been recommended by LiteOn for that drive. Believe me, i NEVER got a coaster! Only onc i bought the wrong typw - normally i always used "1-4x" which my old Nero (5.5) gave me the options to burn at 2x or 4x. But once i accidently bought "1-8x" and there Nero gave "4x" as minimum, and it screwed up a few - out of 10 i could burn 6 or 7 successfully, the others came out unreadable. Between last april and now i burned roughly 100 data DVD's using that LiteOn drive, Nero 5.5 and those Princo 1-4x discs.

About four weeks ago, on thursday evening, i shut down my computer. Coincidentally i had burned a DVD that evening, everything went fine. The next morning, my machine wouldn't power up - started acting up, power cycling etc. Wasn't a Windows fault, it started power cycling already during or even before POST. I suspected mainboard, and subsequently replaced it.

I found that there were no new quality boards for my (6 months "old") CPU in the market any longer, so in the end i ended up building a completely new rig, keeping only my hard drives and the DVD drives. Any attempt to "rescue" my old Windows XP failed - i got it to run but it would fire error messages at me any minute, there was just too many conflicts with new drivers and old ones that wouldn't properly uninstall, so i decided to go for Vista. Cost me a hell of a lot of $$ to get the original one (two months salary.....) and then headache and it's kids to get it running - Vista is DEFINITELY a bitch to install. Finally got it all done.

Now Nero 5.5 would not install, neither would a 7.x that i had on my boyfriend's laptop, so i went to get the latest version which was compatible with Vista, it's the one i have now, 7.5.9.1 which, as i know by now, isn't actually the latest, but the latest they had for sale there. It installed and seemed to run fine.

And then - BAMM. The "Illegal Disc" crap. What for? I've used those discs and that drive for 10 months without any problem whatsoever! The first discs that i wasted were from the package (i buy them in 25er packages) that i had been using before, so no different charge or whatever. So i suspected the poor drive having been "killed" by whatever killed the mainboard....... bought a new one right after my first post here, and with that i get it so-so working now, yesterday i created two more "coasters" but three good ones too, and today i burned 2 good ones and no further coasters. Thanks god i am now finished with burning and got all my backups done and video files on disc, now i have a week or so trying to get Nero to update to it's 7.7.x version (stupid update just won't go!) before i need to get burning again.

Now Princo discs can't have gotten that bad in coincidence with me installing Vista and a newer version of Nero, can they? I believe more that either 1) Nero 7.x is a piece of sh!t as many people tell me or 2) Vista itself makes things incompatible, which might be the reason why so many burning programs won't work with it in first place. I do NOT want to blame it on the poor Princo discs since i have been working with those for 10 months without ANY problems whatsoever.

(Nero unfortunately went the same way as most softwares - old versions are nice, offering good functionality and good speed at work, but the newer they get, the more they are pumped up to monsters that are made up of 50% optical gizmos, 45% bugs and 5% functionality... Nero 5.5 gets the job done at 169 MB hard drive space, where Nero 7.5 full install demands 1.5 GIGAbyte.... heck what are they thinking........ and Nero 5.5 starts to full function in 5 seconds on a 1.000 MHz machine while Nero 7.5 needs 15 seconds on a 2.800 MHz machine.... oh come on...... I am currently trying to figure out how to install Windows XP AFTER Vista, get dual boot going and then use XP and good old Nero 5.5 to burn DVD's!)

Anyway i will try to find those chinese-sounding discs (Taiyo Yuden) coming saturday and give 'em a try... if they are good, i might stick to them. Hope they are not costing as much for one as Princo's are for 25.

                      Kind regards.....

                      Thanh

those chinese sounding disks are made in japan by the company that invented the cd-r disk

say the name slowly with reverence

a faulty power supply can cause the problems you are experiencing

I have passed on nero 7.5 and Vista

imgburn in build mode does fine burning data dvd's

It takes up 2.2MB of hard drive space and has some neat tools included

                          Hello again

Thanks for advise. However my power supply is, like the rest of my computer, a mere four weeks old, and it's a 460 watts "Enermax" unit, i believe those are good enough in quality to last four weeks without becoming faulty

Yesterday i finally got the download of Nero's upgrade, running 7.7.5.1 now and it works like charm Nevertheless i'll give ImgBurn a try as well, i am always open to try alternative software. I will also try to get someof the Taiyo Yuden discs, altough right now also my Princo's work perfectly again as they always did before. Still i want to know how is the quality on those, since they seem to be highly recommended.

Hmm this wouldn't leave me alone so i just checked the manual for my new burner. Guess what. It does no longer recommend Princo - but NEITHER does it recommend TaiyoYuden! Does Taiyo-Yuden make DVD-R disks at all? They recommend that brand for DVD+R but why not for -R..? Princo is still recommended (amongs others) for all types of CD media. But for -R there's Sony, TDK, Maxell and Mitsubishi. Strange...........

                          Kind regards.....
