    New computer help with monitor!!

Hey guys just wondering I just bought a new computer and the moniter it came with is a digital flat panel lcd. It has inputs for vga or dvi. The computer I have does not have a dvi output just the basic vga, can i buy a converter to convert vga to dvi and then plug it into the moniter using dvi and if I do this will it be a digital signal to the moniter?

usually the better video cards have dvi out so I would upgrade or just use the vga

not that much difference in the interface unless you have a great video card

depends upon what you do, if you have a high end monitor and do graphics or game then you need a higher end video card

I personally did not notice a difference between D-sub and DVI, though I was using a 17" LCD and a Geforce FX 5200 at the time. I would probably notice a difference now though, due to better hardware.

@anony; I know you are a big gamer; do you like the games display better on your LCD or CRT? A few gaming forums I went to suggest that games appear much better on CRT.

What are your thoughts on this?

Guess it depends on the quality of the panel and personal preference. I for one have always found LCDs sharper and easier on the eyes than CRTs. The most common complaint you'll hear is ghosting with response times over 8ms.

Currently I play on a 37" HDTV, and it looks spectacular, wouldn't dream of going back to CRT

That's interesting; many folks, myself included, complain that the LCD's are "blurry", as per my thread that I started some weeks ago.

I am still dealing with that issue, trying to warm up to the new look of the LCD...

The 37" LCD is in the lounge with the HTPC, most gaming goes on in there . Don't play much but CSS on my main PC since it's running Linux and I hate rebooting for Windows.

Don't see it with any of mine. What's the response time? Running at the native res? Some monitors have a sharpness setting.

                        Acer AL2216W (22" WS)
                        native resolution of 1680x1050
                        5ms (GTG)

                        I know, a "budget" monitor...
Here's the thing; when running at the native resolution, it is pretty much clear, but the icons, etc. are so small.

If I bump the res. down a bit, the text, etc. size is comfortable for viewing, but that is when the contrast, blurriness in the worst.

You know, there is something else that I have noticed; not what I would call "ghosting", but a sort of "lag" when I scroll down a page. I can see the text sort of stretch slightly... I would'nt call it ghosting, really. Do you understand what I am referring to?

                          katz,

it takes a good vid card to push that big a monitor

also have you tried to adjust the size of text and icons?

Yeah, If I really play with the settings I can get it pretty close. Thing is, when I open different programs, or browse to websites here & there the text sizes & formatting can get really screwed up.

However, I am not going to pursue this too much farther with this pc. I will have the new one ready to go in the next week or so, & I will be using this monitor on the new one.

Increasing DPI is the best way to do this, in your other thread you mentioned text formatting in your browser was getting messed up. If you cannot get it to look right in IE, try Firefox (or Firefox Portable if you don't wish to install it).

                              What's the refesh rate?
