    NEC 3550 Firmware Update 1.07

I just happened to be looking around on the Firmware Page and noticed a new Firmware released on April 5th for the NEC 3550.

I don't know what changes have been made to the new version as of yet, but I will try to find out.

Chewy? Others? What do you think about the new firmware after all this time?

Even better, Liggy and Dee have there version of the 1.07 firmware.

Yeah, I don't understand that part. I haven't found what changes have been made yet, maybe that's why?

Some minor strategy changes? Seems odd to see a new release, and a reference date 6 months old?

Looks like Liggy and Dee just enabled Bitsetting for new firmware, strategies are the same.

New strategies when compared to 1.06 and 1.Y6 though. I might have to be the guinea pig this time instead of Gary D,lol.

well I just found liggy's thread on it, looks like nec sat on it after writting it or just forgot and is releasing in hindsight. Many have crossflashed to a newer maddog and maybe nec just figured they ought to release it after all.

would like to test especially if I had a brand new nec 3550 instead of one that's seen it's better days

about to call the drive "the phoenix"

The DVD+R strategy is the same as Mad Dog's version that Gary D tried. It seems to be the main change in strategies when comparing other versions.

Well, I must be courageous today I'm gonna try it. I wish I had a new NEC too, but let's see if this old beast had some good burns left in it.

I finally found a definitive statement from Liggy about the drive had no mechanism for learning media like benq or liteon, so there's really no need to
worry about disregarding the first few burns after a flash of new firmware.

Real problem is the lack of high quality consistent media to test with

Firmware updated successfully. Now time to play.

I have still have some Sony MIJ 1-8x +R and lots of TYG02 -R and always some cheap stuff for extra testing.

New firmware looking good. So far I have tried a few quick burns on +R, bitsetting works fine.

A few burns with TYG02 -R, results look as good or better then ever.

Haven't used the NEC much for burning lately, hoping it still has some life in it!

I will post some results in the Disk Quality Scan Thread.

did it get rid of the spikes on 12x and 16x burns?

Haven't made it that far yet Chewy, forgot to mention burned only @ 8x.

                    I will test that next.

best tested with those iffy verbatim disks, not really appropriate for the ty's

Yep, that's what I was thinking.

These TYG02's will only go to 12x, the YUDEN will go 16x.
I wouldn't want to waste them, especially when I know this NEC has always given me nice 8x burns.

                        I have a pile of 1-16x MCC 004, I don't mind playing with those.

Does the "new" stock firmware update now support bitsetting? Did I understand you correctly.

The new "stock" firmware 1.07 as found on the firmware page does not support bitsetting.

Liggy and Dee's 1.07 firmware does support bitsetting and it works fine. It appears to be one of the few changes to the 1.07 stock firmware. All of the strategies are the same.

                            @ Chewy

The 12x burns look okay, 16x is when the PIF really climbs and those higher spikes show up (with NEC scan).

some sort of relinking points that a benq or nec will show but liteon's don't show? samsung seems to share a lot with liteon as far as scanning goes?
