Does anyone know where these webmasters get this forum design from? It is the same one used @ www.soundlineup.com and www.projectmayo.com etc etc.

It is powered by vBulletin, as you can see at the bottom of the page. I believe that many forums are powered by this software (or script?) and it is no wonder they all look uncannily similar.

you (or we for that matter) might not be able to change the way ths board looks ( and i wouldnt even think of changing it), but you could of course make sure, THE CONTENT is outstanding.
that, however, is up to you, your ambition and attitude!

soundlineup.com doesn't appear to have a forum, and projectmayo.com uses phpbb, not vBulletin.It is the same one used @ www.soundlineup.com and www.projectmayo.com etc etc.
This forum is based on the default vBulletin style, which looks like this :
I can change the colors, button images, etc ... but that would take ages, and unless some serious PHP code changes are made, the forum would still look and work pretty much the same way (albeit with different colors and button images) - I might as well write a new forum in PHP while I am at it, as opposed to paying for the vBulletin scripts.Comment

Im sorry, all those car audio sites run together. Im not knocking it, infact it is an incredible system. But the main design is used in many other places. I am beginning to believe that it is a software package that a company can purchase to use on their web page.
The is the best and most well maintained forum I have been to. I say that as tribute to the admin and the main posters.

forum.sounddomain.com doesn't use vBulletin either - it uses Ultimate Bulletin Board.
All these different types of forums, like vBulletin, UBB, phpbb are all PHP scripts written by companies, and people can buy them and install onto their servers, and make minor changes like colour, images ...
There are also free forum scripts.
The big difference, I can see, is that commercial forum scripts have better admin interfaces, which allows you to add custom user titles, prune posts/users and an easy PHP changing interface (as opposed to hacking the .php files themselves, the changes are stored in the database). They are also updated quite frequently, and any bugs (especially security ones) are fixed quite quickly.
While forums that use the same set of scripts may look the same, forums that use different scripts may also look the same, since forum functionality is pretty much standard throughout (eg. smilies, email notification, post, reply).
A lot of sites are made up entirely of PHP these days - a lot of them use the same set of PHP scripts (eg. PHP nuke) as well (and so have a similar set of functionalities, and a similar look).Comment

Im not a big fan of php mostly because i have already sunk six months of my life into asp.net. Im starting to think I made a bad choice and that makes hate it more. VBulletin is so nice though, but I don't want to betray my work, so I will search for an asp or aspx bulletin script.

On my system at least, asp really slows down websites. I prefer php, its faster and free. I like this forum, I checked doom9.org, but it just doesn't seem as nice as this is (in terms of design). Plus, the content is what I come here for, real answers to real problems
