I would go for the Lite-On...chances are the Sony is a rebadged litey anyway.

What are you going to use the drive for mostly?

there are a lot of choices out there

skips and freezes are typical of cheap media....I'm not familiar with any other threads that you may have going there, but I'm sure this was discussed there as well. It's a shame to think a 20X drive would be reduced to burning at 4X, I think I would look at some other things as the culprit.

Thanx again I priced some verbatim blanks on ebay today as I see they r highly rec here 50ct dvd-r16x 4.7gb around $25 then there r digital media 8x a little more expensive I have been using memorex dvd-r 16x 4.7gb cause I work for a graphic art supply and i get 100ct for 25-30$ never had a prob then I just got a new spindle and made 20 coasters so i slowed down my burn to 2x now up to 4x and all is well i'll prob experiment with 6x to find these blanks threshold

                      Lite-On LH181AP

I replaced my old lite-on 8x three months ago because it would not boot up dvds....no problem with music discs. Well, guess what? The LH18x1AP i replaced it with has also died in a similar manner. The drive lite is on, but the disc isn't spinning very fast, if at all.
If you try to access the dvd via WMplayer or Nero movietime, it locks up the program, and the whole pc is dead! Have to power cycle the pc.....Any suggestions or insights as to why these drives work on cd's, but die without warning on dvds?

                          Lite-On dvd burner

Well Chewy, I yanked the drive out of my 'puter and took it to a mom and pop 'puter store where I bought it 3 months ago. They specialize in building pc's to order....I just wanted them to check out the drive...which they did....and it indeed had croaked. They gave me a Lite-On 20X free of charge - it took right off when I put it in my pc.....but I have grave reservations about how long this one will last. Can you recommend another, hopefully more reliable replacement?

A bad power supply could have been the reason the other drives died and could lead to another replacement in the future...These drives are pretty hardy, I've had an NEC for about three years and it still performs like a champ.
