hi need some help in getting a guide or advice on putting my family dv recordings onto dvdr , do i need to convert to vob files , when i download to my pc it is an avi file , what and how do i change this so i can copy on dvdr.
everyones help needed, thanks hope to hear form u all soon.

Since you have an AVI file now. You can use a software called “DVDit” to covert the file(s) to DVD standard *.VOB, *.IFO, *.BUP files. You also need DVD burner to burn the files on a DVDR.

thanks for the advice will check it out (dvdit), have now copied to dvdr
by using MGI VIDEOWAVE 5, it was so easy to do with it , but maybe yours is better , thanks amoda1 , hope , i can return the favour sometime. cheer's again

Camcorder to DVD-R

It really depends on what you'd like to do with the footage.

If you'd simply like to take what you have on the tape and dump it exactly to DVD-R /+R for set-top viewing, the simplest program to do so is Sonic's MyDVD (www.sonic.com). Simply connect your DV Camcorder to the PC using FireWire, and the software will set chapter points automatically and transcode the DV footage to MPEG-2 and then author it for DVD, all behind the scenes and all in a single step.

If you'd like to edit the footage - getting creative by cutting, transitioning between scenes, adding titles and soundtracks, mixing audio/video, etc., you have to use two pieces of software - one, a digital editing program, and two, a DVD authoring program.

IMHO, the BEST realtime digital editing program out there is VideoVegas 3.0 (www.sonicfoundry.com). It requires no special hardware, and you can preview EVERYTHING in real time (many of the hardware-based systems require you to transcode your edited DV to MPEG-2 before viewing what you've done). Once you've created your masterpiece using VV3 (which keeps it all in the DV format) you transcode to MPEG-2 and choose the quality of the MPEG-2 (bitrate,etc.) so you can make sure the file will fit on a single DVD-R/+R. VV3 is an AMAZING piece of software - it's used professionally for many big projects (e.g. the show 24 on Fox). You should be able to get it via a promo for around $199 if you try hard (it lists for $500 or so I think).

This is the point where you need to author the DVD-R/+R from the MPEG-2 footage. There aren't that many good choices here. Sonic (www.sonic.com) has a program called DVDit! SE that does the job. You pick your menu backgrounds, buttons, assign links to various parts of the movie, import the movie, etc. When the menus etc. are done, you "create" the DVD - you can have it burn it, but I recommend you have it create a DVD "Folder" on your HD - e.g. the VIDEO_TS folder. Then you can use a good burning program (e.g. Veritas RecordNowMax) to burn it to the DVD media of your choice.
