    HD DVD Fire Sale Thread

The fire sale has started, at least in Australia. Just got myself 10 HD DVDs for $USD 7.40 each from dstore.com.au, all are titles that I don't own on DVD yet. The Rambo trilogy for $22 on HD? Yes please!!

The list of discounted titles was shrinking as I ordered, but hopefully, I got in there in time.

HD DVD sales are surging right now as adopters try to get as many titles on the format while they can to justify keeping the player:

HD DVD Sales Strong Despite Format's Demise

Over at online retailer Amazon.com, HD DVD software has been a surge in sales since word of the format's defeat began circulating. Leading the charge is The Complete Matrix Trilogy from Warner, currently unavailable on Blu-ray Disc. It's sales rank has increased 1,938%, the third highest in all of home video.

What's more surprising are the number of pre-orders for upcoming HD DVD titles, a sign consumers aren't ready to throw their players in the closet just yet. For example, HD DVD exclusive Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street with Johnny Depp from Paramount sits at #12 on the movers and shakers list at Amazon, up 180%.

Just got 3 more titles for $0.95 each. No, that's not a typo - that's $2.85 Australian dollars ($USD 2.62) for Apollo 13, Chronicles of Riddick and Spartacus. The online store had a promotion for $10 coupons, I managed to get 3 of them, plus the $1 shipping means 3 separate $9.95 orders for $0.95 each.

Unless there are other big sales, it looks like my HD DVD purchase is done. My saved money can now go towards new Blu-ray movies.

Ah ... the joy of being format neutral.

I recently got this 25 pound voucher for Amazon.co.uk and went there to see if there are any good Blu-ray or HD DVD movies to buy with it. I ended up buying 3 DVDs instead, since with the exchange rate, it works out better to buy locally for the full price (which is already twice as much as in the US).

Not a huge Tarantino fan though, but already have Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction on DVD. My HD buying principle is not to buy anything I already own on DVD, unless it's a movie that I really enjoy. The Amazon.co.uk listing for The Godfather Trilogy on HD DVD got me somewhat interested, but chances are it won't make it onto the format before Paramount pulls the plugs. The price is pretty good though, so I might put in a pre-order just to see what happens.

Hm, you can get money to buy HD DVDs? Or what is this promo on Amazon?

I'm still using normal DVD... but it's still interesting being an innocent by-stander in the format war.

The voucher was for putting affiliate links on the main Digital Digest website to Amazon.co.uk. And it only took about 2 years to earn that 25 pounds

On reflection, I should probably have used the voucher on The Godfather Trilogy on HD DVD. Apparently, this one might be for real since Paramount has been making noises about this release for some time, and the release date has just been re-adjusted by Amazon recently, which suggests that they've received some confirmation from Paramount as to when it will be released.

As for the Universal $9.95 sale, Universal has said that more stock will be available on 3rd/4th March, including for the titles The Kingdom, Shaun of the Dead, Serenity and T2. Complete list here:

I still haven't decided to get T2 or not. If I do, it would be the 4th version of T2 that I own (normal edition, R1 Ultimate edition, R1 Extreme edition, and now, the HD DVD edition). I think I probably should save my money and wait for future sales from Paramount and Warner, as since my last post, I had ordered 4 more titles from this sale, bringing the total to 17 and the price to just a little bit above $120.

That is some good deals I am very envious of Godfather series.I did get a good deal on a Disney Blu-ray movie,I got it for $3.95.It was a gift/apology from Disney for screwing up the VERY popular and exclusive Blu-ray Mcqueen car(they ran out). What happened was Disney's computers mucked up and people were getting 2-10 cars in the mail. It's not up to par with admins deals but I thought I would share the story any way

I think as a future HD format, HD DVD is dead. If you haven't bought into it, don't buy into it. But currently, for existing HD DVD owners like myself, it's time to get as many discs as possible (for as cheap as possible) to stock up on things to watch on our HD DVD players (although I use mine mainly for DVD upscaling).

Some new titles are now available at another store I like to shop at. Despite what people say, I liked Waterworld and I think I will pick it up, along with the $AUD 4.92 Ray (even though I have this title on DVD already). Dante's Peak at $7.92 is mighty attractive as well.

It's funny that, after getting picked up with high prices, Australia is now leading the rest of the world in the HD DVD fire sale. I think it has something to do with how poorly HD DVD has managed to do in Australia, probably had lots of titles in the warehouses to get rid of.

Battlestar Galactica Season 1 (6 disc HD DVD set) now less than $USD 27 including shipping! Definitely getting this one, since my current DVD set is the one that doesn't have all the extra features (and obviously, not HD). Heroes Season 1 at the same price too. Far too many bargains that need to be picked up ...

Got both box sets and a couple of others I don't have on DVD. I guess resistance was futile.

On the other hand, I don't have any of these titles on DVD (apart from BG:S1) and I just calculated that to buy these on DVD at current prices, it would have cost $36 more not including BG:S1, or $81 more with BG:S1 included. It's a no brainer.

The last place to hold any major sales in Australia will be EzyDVD (both online and B&M stores). They've secured a lot of stock, and depending on who you ask, the sales is ready to go on the 28th of March (available for pre-order before that online, and probably in store as well if stock arrives early). Prices are a bit higher than what went on at other stores last week. After this sale is done with, that's it for HD DVDs in Australia I think.

EzyDVD still has the Universal titles for pre-order, and they've just added a new "Beat the Bomb" sale for some Warner titles, including the entire Harry Potter range. Paramount's stuff coming soon.
