    New TMPGENC User Needs Help

Hi all. I am really glad that I found this forum. I am a new user of TMPGenC DVD Author (version 3) and TempGenc Source Creator (which I thought I needed but might not actually need).

The first thing I did was start a project and try to add some .avi files that were created by my Canon SD700 IS camera. I have no problem playing these files by themselves on my computer, using something like Windows Media Player.

When I insert the videos into Tmpgenc DVD Author, they are inputted fine. But when I try to view one just to see how it looks or edit it, I get sound but no video. This is true for .mpg files as well.

I tried building a menu and actually burning a DVD. On the burned DVD, everything played well and I was really happy with the end product. But when in the program, .avi and .mpg (which is all I have in original files) don't display.

Can someone help me to understand what's going on here. I am actually very good with my computer. I am in fact a computer systems consultant. But I can't figure this one out. Normally I would assume that some codec is missing from my system but the files play fine using other players. I am under the impression that .avi and .mpg files are supported in version 3.

When the .avi files wouldn't display, I used Tmpgenc Source Creator to convert them to .vob files but when I tried to load the .vob files into DVD Author, I was told they were not valid to import. I don't understand why Source Creator gives you the option to create .VOB files and then DVD Author won't accept them. Can anyone explain that to me too?

Sorry to mix two different sets of questions into one post but the second question really came out of trying to work on the first one for me.

I am putting high hopes on this forum to be able to help me sort this out and get going (at least the actual output looked good but I want to be able to edit it while still in the program).

ADDITIONAL INFO: If I create the DVD image on my hard drive and try to play with PowerDVD, I get audio but no video. If I burn the image, I get everything correctly. I can play avi files with something like windows media player fine but inside the program I can't see video using avi files as input. If I try to play mpg files outside the program, I get audio but no video. So I have some kind of mpg problem on my computer? How do I fix it? Commercial DVDs play fine on my computer.

Looking forward to your responses........... Rob

      Video Stream: M-JPEG, 15mbps, 640x480,30fps
      Audio Stream: PCM,88.2kbps,11.024khz,1 channel

Additional Info: I can't seem to get anything to edit in the program. I used Source Creator to change the .avi files to several different formats and none of them will display video in the editor. I tried .vob files, .mpg files. These files all play in other players not internal to the program.

Even More Info:: If I take the avi file and run it through tmpgenc dvd source creator 4 I can see the video while it's converting but when I put the converted .mpg file back into dvd author, I still can't see video from within the program. So neither the original avi file or mpg created from the original using dvd source creator works.

Thanks for being willing to help me with this.

      Rob

Can you please upload a small part( about 1-2 min )of the MJPEG file so that I can test it in my TDA3 ?

But when I try to view one just to see how it looks or edit it, I get sound but no video.
And how are you trying to view it in TDA3?

I am loading the file into TDA3 and then double clicking the video file to bring up the edit screen. Then I am hitting the play button. The frames go by and the audio plays but the display screen just stays black.

I took the .mpg file that DVD Source Creator made from the .avi file and loaded it into a another mpg editor that I have and had the same problem with that program: audio but no video.

It seems like I have a systemwide problem except that these files will all play fine in Windows Media Player.

How do I upload the file? Where am I uploading to? Not sure about that one. Also, a 10Mb file is only about 5 seconds. You don't really want 1-2 minutes do you? With these files that could be 100Mb.

To some free file hosting site ,like this.
And upload only 1-2 min of the file.

I think I'm on the right track. I went to the ATI site and loaded the latest video drivers for my card (Radeon 9550). Once I rebooted, things started to work. I can now get the avi and mpg files to display in Tmpgenc DVD Author. That's a big victory!!

But somehow my PowerDVD stopped working. So I uninstalled it and then did a clean install of PowerDVD again now that's working but some things aren't working in Windows Media Player. I can't play a DVD in WMP. I know I can play them in Power DVD but WMP is supposed to the use decoder from PowerDVD to play DVD's. I would like to figure out why now suddenly after the steps I've taken it can't.

Not quite completely healthy but getting much better

Good to hear that you have worked out the original problem. Your later problems indicate some sort of codec conflict.
