PS3 (and Xbox 360) owners report freezing errors on GTA IV

Similar reports are cropping up on other gaming sites, including the official US PlayStation forums. Initially, it was believed to have been a problem exclusive to 60gb launch units, but it was soon apparent on 20gb consoles as well.

A handful of Xbox 360 units have also allegedly frozen during play, but the problem is nowhere near as widespread as on the PS3 version.

Apparently turning off auto-save in the game will solve the freezing problem. Some have said that the problem is related to the Internet connection, as if the connection drops out during the game for any reason, it will freeze, but turning off auto-save seems to help.

          GTA IV 1.01 Patch Released

          GTA IV 1.01 Patch Released

Today, GTA IV received an update to fix a few of the problems that faced many PS3 gamers. The update is version 1.01 and supposedly will fix your freezing issues among a few others including multiplayer connectivity. It should also shorten load times on the servers at GameSpy as well as other random problems poeple faced. Whether or not it actually fixes the freezing remains to be seen as a few people are already reporting they still are having the same problems. Anyway, if you have a PS3 and GTA IV, it’s probably best to update it anyway so go ahead and download it.

PS3 Fanboy says the freezing problem is not fixed, at least one type of freezing problem:

So there's the issue with multiplayer connectivity which causes freezing, but I think there's also another issue which causes freezing, which explains why people seem to give conflicting solutions to problems.

A tip is to backup your save game religiously, because I've heard people losing saves because they had to re-install the game.
