As usual I will leave a deeper diagnosis to the real experts on this board. I would, however, suggest that you dump Nero as I did, and use Image Burn (www.imgburn.com) instead. Infinitely more reliable and has made all my burns trouble free...

You must have a lot of stuff running in the background

Sony makes grade B media and that NEC burner was decent when new

You have a junk drivers installed

Try lowering the burn speed also, we can use Imgburn to remove the bad drivers, but you need to read the sticky in general computing regarding freeing up resources/ram

Something is hogging your resources...you only have 49 MB left out of almost a half a gig.

          Get Imgburn here: http://www.imgburn.com (free)

Open Imgburn and go to Tools -> Filter Driver Load Order and post the results here in this thread.

Run a task manager and see what is hogging your system.Did you uninstall nero?

When was the last time you defragged your harddrive?
You said torrents which cannot be discussed but if you are constantly DL'ing and deleting and not defragging that will slow you down.I personally would get at least 1gb of ram.

OK you may be able to burn at 4x but, something is still taxing your cpu. And you should be able to burn Sony media with that burner at 8x so you should still figure out the problem.

Your system isn't ready to do anything yet. You came here for advice, follow it. Find out what is hogging your resources. Get rid of anything you don't need off the drive & defrag it, before you do anything else.
