In TMPGEnc Xpress 2.x, I got used to using the "KDVD-352x480-Half-D1-NTSC" template, because I found it worked really well to take something I had downloaded from the internet, like an flv file from Youtube, and encode it to quite a small file size with no loss of definition from the, admitedly low quality, flv file. Is there a way to achieve the same settings in v. 4.x? I'd really like to be using the new versions, especially since I would be able to go directly from a flv to mpg without having to make an avi first, but I really miss being able to put 7 hours of stuff on a single dvd.

Do you mean TMPGEnc Xpress can take a 5MB .flv file and convert it to even smaller AVI file and then to an MPG? How small can you get a 5MB flv to convert it to a format playable on a "Stand-alone" dvd player!?!?

Just reduce the video bitrate while configuring the encoder.

gonwk: I don't think it makes it smaller than the ftp file; it's usually somewhat larger. I've been using Total Video Decoder to first turn the flv into a divx avi file, then making the mpg with tmpgenc xpress. I'm away from my home computer right now, but I think the mpg is usually about the size of the avi. But the bottom line is that I can put about 7 hours of video onto a 4.3 GB dvd, and it will have no loss of quality from the flv. Probably more important -- using the kdvd template I mentioned, a typical avi file obtained thru bittorrent, for example, will also make into 7 hours per dvd with no noticeable loss of quality. In other words, it's not just poor flv quality that's preserved, but quality somewhat similar, in my inexpert opinion, to a videotape.

paglamon: I know I could fiddle around with the settings, but my hope is that I will be able to obtain either a template itself or find out from someone exactly what settings will duplicate the kddv "KDVD-352x480-Half-D1-NTSC" template that has served me so well.

I think I have made a mistake about TMPGEnc products. I looked more closely at what I have been using and realized that I've been using "TMPGEnc Plus" and not "TMPGEnc Xpress," and that the version I have of the former, 2.5, is more or less the latest version.

I have used both TMPGenc Plus and Express. And I am aware of the KDVD templates for Plus. But, since you asked for something similar for Express, I gave you the link for the Express templates.

Well, thanks again. I downloaded and tried the otslabs templates, and it gave me a file fairly close in size to the kdvd, so I plan to start using T. Xpress with it with flv files, especially when size is not a critical consideration. Another plus with Xpress is that when I experimented with an avi file, I was able to get the audio without having to first extract a wav file, which is what I usually have to do with avi files with T. Plus.
