cmnd prompts issue from pc to modem

I've been having slow speeds on the net w/regards to dl/ul. Tech checked out the modem to server and it was working and reached server, but speeds were slow and fluctuating. Before that he tried to send a cmnd prompt to the modem or server from my PC, and it wouldn't do it resulting in failed attempts, blah blah blah. He saw no pc issues and I have no viruses either. clean install of XP Home.

Now can anyone suggest or figure out why the modem connects to the server, but my computer won't allow a cmnd prompt to the modem? this is over my head, and of course the tech from Verizon as well. Also since it's a pc thing they really have no support for that. If it's a services.msc thing or w/e can someone please try to help me out. I was also thinking maybe it was Avira not permitting the commands. Anyhow any and all suggestions/answers are greatly appreciated. I only have Avira, and Mambam so I don't think it's a AV conflict either. Thnx.

what you describe sounds like a tech has send a PING from your pc to the modem/router via comand prompt!?

    so what exactly happened?

in case your pc is able to connect to the internet then of course a ping (a test signal) must go from pc => modem without problems

since a tech was with you, you seem to have any sort of trouble - which is?

    - bad internet connection or none at all?

    - when did this occur?
    - any soft-/hardware change?

you say: "modem connects to server"
do you mean: modem connects to internet (according to what, who/what said this connection really takes places?) but pc does not connect to modem/internet?

Hi UnCaS. yes exactly. I was online w/the tech as he was checking out my speed issues. there is some inconsistencies so he put a report to main office. also he did try to ping a cmnd from my pc to modem but it wouldn't take. it would say request timed out 4 times. it also says ping statistics: packets sent 4., received =0, Lost=4, (100% loss)

now after calling again because of not being able to open up ie or chrome, i had to reinstall settings w/modem w/tech. i'm online now and i just pinged www.google.com and this time the comnd went through. it might be a modem issue. idk. Any ideas? Thnx. i'll have to wait for their so called checkup of the line etc... and see what they say. usually same bs. nothing's wrong. blah, blah, blah...

oh n yes i meant modem connects to internet because i was online w/tech n he used remote feature to run some tests.

        hmmm

in case one cannot send a ping successfully from pc => modem then of course there should be NO internet (not slow - NONE) because the connection from pc to modem to ...(internet/other pc in the network etc) is not ok

there can be numerous reasons for this problem:

        -cable is not connected properly/broken

-wireless settings may not be ok

        - tcp/ip settings are very common a good reason: network card is not provided with correct dns server/gateway (usually the ip of the modem is set as dns server)

        - network adapter may be damaged (never experienced this)

but all this cannot be the case right now as you seem to be conencted to the internet so the connection PC => Inet must be fine

you said: not being able to OPEN UP ie/chrome: what does this mean exactly?
do the programs NOT start or do they start but do not connect you to any given url/site?

if they do start but dont connect: which browser DOES work (since your are online now any of them seems to work fine)

did you have any software issues lately?
        new hardware installed?

this is a clean install of xp home. so no viruses. it's a custom disc using nlite, but i don't think that has anything to do w/it. i'm online now n was a while ago to like i said w/tech, until i decided to reset modem, and unplug everything and put back on again.

at this point i wasn't able to go to a page in ie but open it up i was. chrome is my default so when that opened up it brought me to my verizon dsl account/modem dsl page saying i needed to redo or join etc... i called tech n he redid the configurations for the whole dsl/modem thing. after that i was able to open ie and use it and also chrome.

i told the tech to hold on until i pinged www.google.com to see if it would take. it did this time. speed is still slow. it took 27ms. to ping, that was for avg. fastest n everything. so right now idk what it could of been. i'm in process of checking 4 firmware update on modem.

other than that the only thing i can think of is 7, and how it sets u up to be ready to use the home network. i have 7 64 on my other new build. whether that's a issue or not idk. i also thought maybe since i unplugged everything b4 that the computer or w/e had to configure the Netgear 5 port switch U pointed me too. that i don't think could have interrupted the ping from reaching the modem as like u n i said i was online.

trial n error. i'll just see what these bozos come up w/at verizon main office. if any other clue/suggestion just let me know. thnx as always.

There's a firmware upgrade for the modem. I just checked. Never went down this road. Any experience or suggestion to properly upgrade it? Thnx.

Ok UnCaS, I took the plunge and just hit update from web and it said updated, so I guess everything's well. hopefully I will be able to use this install 4 a bit until 7 comes and gets settled w/all it's 64 apps./compatibility issues. that way I'll concentrate more on 7 64 and just keep xp around until I go straight to just using 7. Thnx as always for your help.

Latest update. Reason can't ping is most likely firewall or av preventing me from cmnd prompt. Googled it, and that was the verdict. no biggie. able to go online and everything else.
