    At Loggerheads

OK, my new Sony DVD ROM is just driving me nuts. I don't have a clue what the missing component is but I suspect it may have something to do with the driver.

For some reason, it just doesn't play a damn thing. I have tried both DirectDVD and WinDVD and in both cases, the drive whirs and eventually just craps out without any indication that anything is playing.

I have enough memory. I have the latest DirectX loaded on my system.

Can anyone tell me what the hell is going on??

Is your drive reading ordinary data discs, ie can you install progs from it and stuff?
What OS are you using? Windows shouldn't need any drivers for your DVD. If you can't read data, then your drive is probably knackered.
Have you tried removing your DVD drive from Device Manager, rebooting and letting Windows detect it again?

Hi Trancemaster and thank you for your assistance. The drive is having no problem reading data. The problem seems to be limited to DVDs.

Would you recommend a re-recognition if some data is being read?

Anything's worth a go if it's Windows we're talking about. You could try here to see if there is any updated firmware for your drive, but DON'T try it unless you know what you're doing. I don't want to be responsible for you doing a bad flash on your drive.

If you can't already guess, I'm stumped!

        Good Luck!
