Need Help Making Samsung SM 308B Drive Region Free

I have a Samsung SM 308B Combo drive installed in my Dell Dimension 4300 and want to make it region free. I am, however, I little bit nervous about using a firmware plug to alter the setting, because I've heard it can backfire miserably.

I would really love some advice on how to make my system region free without ruining the drive. Perhaps if there's someone out there who has successfully (or unsuccessfully so I know that it's a no-go thing!) performed this application, they could give me some tips!

Otherwise, if someone could reccomend a reliable, affordable region free drive or an AFFORDABLE (the key word, I'm a very poor college student!) way to get a region free or multi-region dvd player, PC or otherwise, I would love it!

Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks.

Region-free firmware for the SM-308B is here:

If you don't want to flash firmware you can try demo versions of the various software solutions -- Remote Selector, DVD Region Free or AnyDVD.
