    Q: Encode mkv to mkv

    Hi guys,

sorry for bothering you, but I didn't succeed in solving this problem myself:

I want to encode a mkv file to a mkv file with specific bitrate etc.
In the end it should look like this:

    General
    Complete name : J:\Other\Ocean 1080p\Ocean.mkv
    Format : Matroska
    File size : 7.49 GiB
    Duration : 1h 29mn
Overall bit rate : 11.9 Mbps
    Encoded date : UTC 2010-06-01 14:49:23
    Writing application : mkvmerge v3.3.0 ('Language') gebaut am Mar 24 2010 14:59:24
    Writing library : libebml v0.8.0 + libmatroska v0.9.0

    Display aspect ratio : 16:9
    Frame rate : 23.976 fps
Original frame rate : 25.000 fps
    Color space : YUV
    Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
    Bit depth : 8 bits
    Scan type : Progressive
    Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.201
    Writing library : x264 core 67 r1127 8d82fec
    Encoding settings : cabac=0 / ref=1 / deblock=0:0:0 / analyse=0x1:0 / me=dia / subme=8 / psy_rd=1.0:0.0 / mixed_ref=0 / me_range=4 / chroma_me=0 / trellis=0 / 8x8dct=0 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / chroma_qp_offset=-2 / threads=1 / nr=0 / decimate=1 / mbaff=0 / bframes=0 / keyint=12 / keyint_min=7 / scenecut=0 / rc=abr / bitrate=10000 / ratetol=1.0 / qcomp=0.50 / qpmin=2 / qpmax=31 / qpstep=3 / ip_ratio=1.25 / aq=1:1.00

    Audio
    ID : 2
    Format : DTS
    Format/Info : Digital Theater Systems
    Format profile : MA
    Codec ID : A_DTS
    Duration : 1h 29mn
    Bit rate mode : Variable
    Channel(s) : 6 channels
    Channel positions : Front: L C R, Side: L R, LFE
    Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
    Bit depth : 16 bits
Because my computer is able to play this file but not the one I know want to reencode.
Could you please tell me what to put in meGUI (or any other encoder/GUI)
to get a file exactly like that? With all those command lines I feel like

    Thanks in advance!

    You could try this:
Quick AVI Creator is a DVD/Video to AVI/xvid/x264 front-end, which uses several GNU licensed applications to convert DVD/video to AVI/xvid/x264.

it uses x264 encoder. When it pops up the video encode window, just enter the bitrate. Also you should use the Preview Window to get the last frame number, or the frame number where the end credits starts, so it will encode the end credits with fewer bits. If you don't want to bother with that just enter the number of the last frame. Then it will use the bitrate across the whole file.

Unfortunately QAC crashes when I'm trying to load my video.
I'll have to try something different.

Must be a problem vid. I don't recall it crashing on any avi or mkv I've run with it.

edit: I'm assuming you have AviSynth installed? I don't think it installs that. Just AvsP app.

Also you could try doing x264 "by hand." Use a demuxer to split off the audio. Process the video by itself, remux audio and video. That is if the audio is ok as it is. If it's AC3 I usually run ac3fix on it just to check for bad frames.

You can use the mkvtoolnix and related guis to mux/demux
