Blu-ray Penetration Reaches 17% Worldwide, 3D Players Increasing

According to the latest figures released in a new report by Futuresource Consulting, Blu-ray's domestic market penetration has reached 17%, and that there are now 24 million Blu-ray players in the United States, Japan, and Western Europe. This figure does not even include Sony's PlayStation 3, which also functions as a Blu-ray player.

For 3D Blu-ray, it is expected that 10% of all Blu-ray players shipped in 2010 will support the format, with this number rising to 25% in 2011. Many experts believe that the 25% is a conservative estimate, as adding 3D functionality to players is negligible in terms of cost, and competition will ensure all new models may carry this function. That competition also comes from the PlayStation 3, which has just recently been upgraded, via firmware, to support 3D Blu-ray.
