Anti-Piracy Tool For Theaters Turn to Anti-Privacy Tool

It's like that Yakov Smirnof joke, except it could become a reality soon. "In the cinema, you don't watch movies, the movies watch you".

Aralia Systems has devised a night vision monitoring system for cinemas, partially to root out camcording pirates, but this new system is mainly designed to monitor cinema-goer's emotions. The movie watcher's responses could then help studios market their movies better.

Of course, some will object to the fact that, after paying quite a lot of movie for a movie ticket, they then lose their privacy as well. It's one thing to stop pirates, but to become human test subject for the marketing team of a faceless corporation? That may be one step too far for many.

    More:

For most people going to a cinema is a good night out. Only a few realize that they are often subjecting themselves to extreme and privacy invading security measures that most airports could only dream of. Filmgoers are already being carefully watched for suspicious behavior by Big Brother's cameras, but soon this technology will be upgraded with sophisticated emotion recognition software.

    Ew, this sounds terrible.

I mean, seriously, when will movie studios realize that it is physically impossible to stop piracy entirely? People *WILL* video tape movies out of theaters as long as...movies are still shown in theaters... why waste more money, time, and effort trying to thwart that when it's not going to make a difference?

If it matters any, most of the camrips I've seen of movies these days come from places like Russia. Not the USA. So again, it won't even make a difference to anyone but those who are legitimately going to a movie theater.
