    Handbrake and Progressive Output

One thing perplexes me about Handbrake's ouput.

I start with DVD content that is Interlaced (according to MediaInfo), I use Handbrake (H264 encode) with no de-interlacing and no-decombing. I watch the ouptut on my LCD computer monitor (using VLC Player) with de-interlacing turned off - and the output often shows NO interlacing artifacts (despite ample motion).

But sometimes, I do the same and need to turn de-interlacing ON in the player to remove artifacts.

And sometimes - no matter what I do on the player (interlacing ON or OFF), interlacing artifacts show. In this case, I'm forced to use the Handbrake decomb filter.

Note: Equivalent results when watching over a Plasma TV- though I have no control over it's de-interlacer.

    Why this range of outcomes?

And if Handbrake's output is always Progressive - how come my Plasma TV can know that it should de-interlace?
