what to do now?

I came across a really lousy transfer with lots of noise, grain, dirt, etc.
I tried the basic undot/deen combo and it cleaned things up quite nicely. The one annoying artifact remaining is the blocking going on in the backgound or mono-chromatic fields. What do you folks recommend in addition/instead of the basic filters. The picture is soft as well but I don't like to sharpen very much due to the artifacts that creates. thx

Try removegrain I attached the download for it, it has strength settings in the html doc.The other attachment is deen beta 1

Here are deen settings
light cleaning --> deen("a3d",3,4,1,4)
medium cleaning --> deen("a3d",3,6,1,6)
heavy cleaning --> deen("a3d",4,9,1,9)

Which mode is the best for denoising? As far as compression is concerned, my benchmarks so far give the following mode ranking: 4,17,9,8,3,7,6,2,5,1, but modes 4 and 17 really stand out. As far as artifacts are concerned, we have unfortunately almost the reverse mode ranking: 1,5,2,18,6,7,8,17,3,4,9. Modes= 1,5,2 are the risk free modes, the modes 18,6,7,8,17 show low to moderate artifact risk (usually some softness) and modes 3,4,9 have severe problems with thin lines. Mode 9 has less artifacts than mode 4, but when they occur they look a lot more ugly. Mode 17 is my clear personal favorite. As far as compression is concerned it is fairly close to the leader, mode 4, and I have only seen some softness but hardly any visable artifacts. The frame width of the input clip must be > 36 (SSE version) or > 68 (SSE2 version).

I went through the removegrain doc and tried to dechipher it into English. I did see that mode=1 is the same as undot, so I tried mode=2 and deen(). I then see you added some parameters for deen and I tried
removegrain (mode=-2)
deen("a3d",3,4,1,4).

This gives pretty good results. I see a lot of this is a fine balance between cleaning up the image (getting rid of noise and artifacts) and minimizing softness and loss of sharpness and introducing new artifacts.

It seems the time that deen("a3d",3,4,1,4) takes more resources than deen(). Is that correct? Also, I am using the SSE2 versions as I have an Athlon 64 processor. Is this OK as I found some reference to these versions, maybe early ones, that did not work properly?

Are these other functions useful; you did not mention but are in the doc?

Correct it is slow

Yes they are, if you look through this filter thread there is a lot of useful information.You can do testing on small clips of your movie to see how a certain filter works

test fft3d filter,is the best "sharpener" that i know but is slow.(better is one good result slow than bad result fast)
see the parameters to adjust in this same thread(i put some links here showing comparisons between filters if i good remember).
to test filters,open the script.avs from DVDRB in virtualdub and do one screenshot.
edit the script and use differents filters(and parameters),open again in vdub and do a new screenshot,compare the screenshots.
will be faster and you don't need to encode!

Sorry I left that out.As for the fft3d filter you need to download the fftw3.dll and put it in C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder for it to work.I agree with jeo though I also think the fft3dfilter is the best sharpener but like he said it's slow

But still have a problem that can be resolve by changing the targetsectors ini setting, has techreactor.

Because for example, to pass a DVD of "Lost", that is DVD9 to DVD5, that need a high compression rate, the results of the filters, just can be visible doing compression, because de original it's perfect.

In this case the effects of compression are minimal, but in some parts of the episodes, especial whit smoke, we can notice some macroblocking, and in the contours of the objects to.

Anyway, for me I have in the my hands 3 types of situation that if you could, I would be very glade to have your help.

First: Aply filters in DVD-Video that don't need compression (already DVD5 Allo Allo Series), but have noise, and some dots.

For this I am using Undot().Deen(), in editor AVS from DVD-RB.

I'm having good results, but I could get better, why not?

I saw this in afterdawn.com guides.


Second: Same as above but original DVD9.

Using the same filters whithout parameters.


Third: DVDs original DVD-9 that need high compression, and the original image is perfect (like "Lost")

What filters should I use to minize the effects of high compression?

i have horrible english and have to read in "slow motion"...

few hints:
sharpeners filters: encrease quality with gentle adjusts but give less compression

deen and undot: magnific compression but are slow...cool option for dvd9-->dvd5.

First:you're with a good option but members from afterdawn.com guides learn here (lol).
see dates of his guides(and editions) and compare with this thread.,,off topic: the last deen version was send for me(in another place,i had another username...) by the developer a loooong time(parameters inclusive) and i send to warpinterprises...(that never send a single thanks),is the version that you can download there. ...(long history).

Second: ah...same as above but original DVD9. (lol)
correct use (for my taste)

Third: deen() ...is really the best if you don't want to lose details,this filter don't create "smoke" around the image(if you know what i mean)..but as i'm really bored,for example:
in the screenshots posted in this page,can you see that with filters the white seems "neon light"..if you can see or not...go ahead,is just a simple detail!

Hello, im very new to using dvd-rebuilder, and so far have only used it along with hc 019....id like to use the filter editor, i have read and downloaded all the filters people have recomended, but when i add the script to the filter screen hc019 no longer works.....if someone could post a sample script and which filters to use id really appreciate it....some of the sources i use are very poor quality transfers, which are only 4 minutes long, from official website, which are free to download....thanks for any help

I have had trouble with see saw.Try removegrain SSE2 or SSE3 which ever on you computer
supports.Try this and put in you filter editor...
