Default PS3 is Not More Powerful than Xbox 360, says Ex-Harmonix Dev

Quote:
Sony has said that the PlayStation 3 has more power than Microsoft's Xbox 360, but that it requires a bit of patience and legwork to leverage that power. Jason Booth, a former developer from Harmonix, just doesn't see it happening. He thinks game designers are trying to match PS3 games to 360 games at best.

Jason Booth, a former Turbine and Harmonix developer who has worked on both Guitar Hero games and Rock Band, has posted some interesting comments on his blog regarding "PS3 misconceptions and spin."

The original blog post is well worth a read:

The last paragraph is especially telling:

Quote:
Sony let their hardware be designed by a comity of business interests rather than a well thought out design that would serve the game development community. They are going to loose hard this round because of it, and I hope that in the next round they take lessons from this round and produce a more balanced and usable machine.

Even the current GeForce 8800 series are "next-gen" compared to the 7800 equivalent GPU in the PS3, it's just that as usual with game consoles, there's a lot of dedicated hardware and hardware optimization to make them perform better than seemingly equivalent PCs.

To be honest, I find it hard to imagine what the next generation of games will look like - they already look pretty good to me. I guess photo realism is the eventual goal, although some games show that stylised graphics beats realism anytime (and not just games, animated features from Pixar for example).

The challenge with the PS3 is getting the access controller right and it's also got less memory to use, the memory is cut.
