Help: Xmpeg can't open output file in XP

Just installed WinXP Pro. Everything works OK but for Xmpeg. It opens up OK, it loads and shows the preview of the movie OK, but when I press "convert" I get an error message:

    FlasKMPEG Warning
An error ocurred when trying to generate the file. Check that you're not using the output file or the program is setup correctly.

After that - in about a minute or so - Xmpeg crashes with the message:

Microsoft C++ library ... buffer overrun detected

    Has anyone got any ideas?

This may happen if after cropping one or another dimension is not multiple of 4.

    You must manually check on.
please look at the Thread http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...threadid=10564 "Tips and Tricks for Xmpeg 4.5"

    Good luck

I just ran the windows update, and updated all the critical updates, and guess what, the error disappeared. So i am very happy that i can use xmpeg again.

            pebetz thanks for the tip.

              hmmm...

Ok, I'm using XP Pro SP1 + all updates on windowsupdate. My crop size IS a multiple of 4. I still get this error. I also get this error with ALL video codecs (even << uncompressed video >>).

              Any ideas?

OK, this error DOES NOT OCCUR when I use uncompressed audio, however this bloats the file size big time. Any ideas?

I had exactly the same problem with w2k
Check your Audio Codecs you will probably find there are duplicates listed when there shouldn't be. Not sure in XP but in w2k they are found in the Multimedia applet of the control panel.

                    Thanks for the suggestion.

There weren't any duplicate codecs, I think I'm going back to 2k pro, XP is giving me too many problems (XP ****ed up my slackware install for instance)

                      Update Audio Codecs

I was having problems getting the same error as others in this post:

An error ocurred when trying to generate the file. Check that you're not using the output file or the program is setup correctly.

The reason for the error I was getting had to do with the audio codec. (I was using the MPEG-Layer 3 audio codec provided with Windows XP Pro). The following link has suggestions for installing an additional audio codec:

A complete guide for DVD to DivX and Xvid conversion, now featuring instructions for Xvid encoding

                      Scroll down to MP3 codec.

                      Hope this helps.
