Video Game Sales Soar In Sept.; 'Halo 3' Pushes Xbox 360 Past Wii

According to figures from NPD Group released late Thursday, video game software sales in the U.S. jumped 64% for the month compared to the same period last year.

The 360 console moved a total of 527,800 units during the month, nearly double the number of units sold in August, according to NPD data.

Still, the Nintendo Wii managed a strong showing, moving 501,000 units during the month - up 24% from August. The company's handheld DS device also saw sales grow nearly 30% to 495,800 units.

Less impressive was the PlayStation 3 from Sony Corp. (SNE) , which sold 119,400 units in September, a decline of more than 8% from August. Faring better was the company's portable PSP device, which saw sales soar by 88% to 284,500 units.
