The good news: Samsung says it is on track to deliver the BD-UP5000 Duo HD Player to retail outlets by mid- to late-December. That means you may yet have a shot at snagging one in time for the holidays.

Samsung says it will issue a firmware update at the end of January 2008 to allow the playback of BD Profile 1.1 discs; given that the company sites the need to test actual movie discs to ensure compatibility, presumably, that means the company anticipates Hollywood content that tap Profile 1.1 features to be out by the end of January.

I have a feeling that when BD 1.1 discs come out, it's going to cause a whole lot of playback problems. This is what happens when hardware is released to a specification when there is no software available to test it. BD-Live/2.0 discs should play in BD 1.1 players, apart from the features that require the extra persistent storage and internet connection. The result of playback of BD 1.1/2.0 discs in 1.0 players (ie. pretty much all of them at the moment) is unpredictable.
