Fast forward to the present, and we're hearing the brilliant technology may not even make the cut for the finalized AACS specifications.
Managed Copy allows limited copies of the movie to be made which are legal, for things like using it in your portable device or a copy of the kids. It's basically legalised DVD backups.
Guess who were the biggest supporters of MC? That's right, the people in the industry that supported HD DVD. In fact, many of them chose HD DVD because Sony the the BDA disliked the idea of MC, although they have since gone ahead with their own limited version of it (Blu-ray playback on PS3, then option to copy to PSP, as well as Fox's "Digital Copy Included" feature - neither provides a 1:1 copy of the movie, which MC is capable of doing). It was only after extreme pressure from the likes of Microsoft, Intel and HP that MC was finally considered a part of the AACS specs. But now that HD DVD is dead, there is no longer any pressure on the AACSLA to adopt MC, definitely not from the BDA anyway.
Shame...
