I actually look forward to buying electronics and having the salesman ask me if I want cables with it, and then go on to explain to me how the stuff I purchased needs a high quality cable, and a $200 HDMI cable will give me a better picture than the $10 one I picked up online. Depending on my mood that day, I would either graciously decline or teach the salesman a lesson on digital versus analogue and why the cable quality matters very little, if anything, when its digital.

Bwahahaha Admin, right on! I do this all the time to the salesguys that try pushing these high priced extras on me. They tend to shut up and give me a deer in the head lights look and walk away. If I go in the store again they very rarely bother to approach me with their sales pitches.

From what I always understood,
HDMI sends a pure digital video/audio signal to your tv..
That said, When I bought my Panasonic Plasma my intentions were to hook up the audio part from my cable box via Optical cable to HK receiver as the sound from the tv itself isn't very good especially when there is music playing along with dialouge. It never sounds balanced as 1 is always louder than than the other.
This usually occurs if you are on a HD channel which is broadcast in 5.1 and is being played thru your 2-3 speaker tv..

bottom line is since the audio was already set up I was able to use Component cables for the video signal which gives you the exact same HD feed[video] from your cable box as you would get from using an HDMI cable.

Hooking HDMI from your tv source be it cable or otherwise to your new tv is not going to give you 5.1 surround out of your usually 2 speaker tv. You still need to go thru a receiver for that so I think an Exspensive HDMI is unnecessary.
Salesmen never tell you that 1 set of Component and 1 optical [ or digital composit] audio cable is all you really need for HD tv and 5.1 or 6.1 surround sound.
My dvd player is hooked up the same way.
1 Component and 1 Optical connect the player to the tv..

Kind of reminds me of the old "pay $400 for the camera and $150 for the case" scam.
At least when I bought my Nikon D70 the salesman at the camera store had the grace to sell me a "generic" zip up camera pouch that fit just fine for about $13. I'm sure if I only spent about $120 more I could've gotten a case with the Nikon logo on the side.
