    Official: PS3 firmware 2.7 released

Sony has released the next PS3 firmware update, version 2.70.

The most significant new features are the ability to engage in text chat in up to three chat rooms from the XMB, including while in-game, and back up videos to an external hard drive.

Anyone tested this? I take it I'll lose my BD-Live capabilities again if I don't update... but as the Wii updates have taught me, I don't update stuff unless I know what all it does anymore.

Is BD-live affected if you don't upgrade? I thought only the PSN features were affected, since I'm sure I remember using BD-live despite not having updated since 2.43

But someone told me when I was first talking about getting a PS3 that you couldn't access BD-Live content unless you upgrade.

Or is that just for out-of-the-box? I haven't tried using BD-Live since the update came out, maybe I will to see what it says.

I think BD-live came with version 2.2 of the firmware - before that, the PS3 didn't support it. So if your firmware is newer than 2.2, then you should be okay. However, PSN will require the latest firmware, so if you download demos or play online, then you'll need the latest version.

            Oh, OK.

But any word on people having problems with firmware 2.7? If not, I may as well download it, since I have a PSN account now...

Check the official PS3 update board, there's usually a thread dedicated to each firmware release and the problems people encounter (for example, one firmware had this problem where it resets video output to component, and so after the upgrade, people who connected their PS3s using HDMI got a black screen only).
