Default Mininova Begins Filtering Out Copyrighted Files

Quote:
One of the oldest repositories for pirated files, Mininova.org, has apparently decided to go legit.

Just weeks after four defendants involved in running Sweden's The Pirate Bay Web site were found guilty of breaching copyright, the owners of Mininova said they would run a "trial" of "content recognition".

This announcement has come as a bit of a shock, to be honest. If you get rid of all the copyrighted stuff on Mininova, there's not much left. This sounds like a very late April Fools joke. The comments for their blog post announcing this has been brutal:

Basically, I'm saying Mininova will be regarded as "that torrent site nobody should both visiting" - kinda like TorrentSpy.

Default previous post was cut short...

Update from Mininova staff:

Hi there,

I thought it would be good to clear up some things:

- Absolutely *no* data of torrent uploaders is exchanged with the 3rd party. So that means no IP address, no mail address, nothing. In fact, the 3rd party just downloads .torrents from Mininova and then does the detection. We do not share *any* info with them, and we never will.
- I want to emphasize that this is a *limited* trial. We run this on this a few torrents/works.
- There are lot of reasons torrents can get removed. For example, a DMCA notice, a delete by us or the moderators, an auto-delete if the torrent is not live any longer, or by this 3rd party system. We will try to think of a system where the uploader gets a message if his torrents are deleted ("torrents [title] was deleted because of [reason]").
- The third party is not creepy, believe me I cannot share a name, but it's an independent company specialized in content recognition.

I hope this helps If there are any questions, please reply in this topic or send us a mail at staff@mininova.org.

Thanks! Niek (+rest of the Mininova team)

I'm more interested in your reason for saying "The Pirate Bay" will denounce them.

I said Pirate Party - not Pirate Bay.

As in, the Swedish political party affiliated with copyright reform... and obviously they're a big supporter of torrent sites. But they likely won't support or be in favor of Mininova anymore...

Yeah, my mistake, I misread your post.
