The next big thing in BitTorrent are public trackers. Trackers are the hub of all torrent activity, if you will, directing sharers to each other. Currently, trackers are owned by BitTorrent websites such as The Pirate Bay. With uncertainty over the future of The Pirate Bay, a couple of public tracker projects have sprung up.
These public trackers will operate independently of the torrent download sites and theoretically could mean that torrenting still goes on even if sites like The Pirate Bay closes. A more long term solution would be decentralized tracking system, and such a system would be almost impossible to shut down. It is the nightmare scenario of the RIAA and MPAA, but their recent legal efforts have sped up the development and adoption of such countermeasures.
