Veoh Wins Legal Battle, YouTube To Benefit From Result

The question of whether a video sharing website, like Veoh or YouTube is liable for the content uploaded by its users has been answered. And the answer is, "No".

Universal Music Group accused Veoh of copyright violations by allowing users to upload unauthorized music videos to the website. Veoh argues that it should not bear the entire burden of what its users get up to, especially with so many videos being uploaded daily. YouTube came under similar attack from Viacom and this ruling should help them in their court case.

The decision today means that sites like Veoh, while still have the obligation to ensure copyright abuse does not occur on their website, will not be fully responsible for user uploads and bear the burden as such. As long as websites have a clear anti abuse policy and takes actions to the best of their abilitites, then that is fine in the court's eyes even if there may be still many videos that are not entirely legal.

Universal Music Group will appeal the decision.
