RIAA CEO Mitch Bainwol has compared the recent Google hacking attempt with its own fight against piracy.
Earlier in the year, Google revealed that the Gmail accounts of human rights activists and some source code were stolen by Chinese hackers.
But in a strange line of argument, the CEO of the RIAA has tried to link the activities of hackers with that of people who download music from the Internet without paying. Describing the hacking attempt as an "OMG" moment for Google, Bainwol also wrote that "Unfortunately, it took this theft of their IP to flip on the switch. Frankly, Google has never been very warm to the idea of copyright protections. Google routinely has sided with the “free access” (more aptly the “free of charge”) crowd against those who actually create the intellectual property."
Bainwol also compares the Chinese government's unwillingness to crackdown on "patriotic" hackers to other government's unwillingness to introduce three-strike systems.
This comes after the RIAA's parent organisation, the IIPA, claimed that open source software leads to anti-capitalism activities (ie. communism).
