3D TV Coming, But At A Cost

As manufacturer roll out 3D TV sets, the full cost of bringing 3D to your home is becoming clearer, and it isn't good new for the budget conscious.

With 3D TVs expected to sell at a premium over normal TVs, there's also the cost of upgrading your Blu-ray player to one that supports 3D, and along with that, a new set of HDMI cables to support the new HDMI standard that adds 3D support. Sony plans to sell 3D TVs 50% more expensive than their 2D equivalents, Samsung also plans to add at least $US 400 to the price of 3D over 2D.

And on top of all this, you still have to buy the 3D glasses. Most of the new 3D TVs use active shutter glasses, which are expensive at $150 per pair, although the TV may come with a pair or two.

Only PS3 owners can save a bit on both upgrades and a new HDMI cable, since the PS3 will be firmware updated to support 3D free of cost, and since the HDMI port remains the same version, no new HDMI cable will be required.

All in all, the cost of upgrading to 3D could be as much as a thousand dollars, and that may just be too much for many that have only recently upgraded to HD/Blu-ray.

TV makers are gearing up to launch 3D TV sets in Australia from next month but overseas pricing reveals a steep price premium over existing models, with a family of four required to spend $US600 on glasses alone.
