Gabe Newell, Managing Director and founder of Valve, makers of the Half-Life series and owners of the ever more popular Steam gaming platform, says that DRM adds negative worth to a product.
Speaking at the Game Developer's Choice Awards, where Newell received an award, Newell says that publishers should adopt a ''what have I done for my customers today?' attitude, and if they do so, they will be plainly able to see that DRM can 'make your entertainment products worth less by wrapping those negatives around them'.
Valve's own Steam platform has extensive use of DRM, but its success shows that gamers may be willing to accept some of the "negatives" of DRM, as long as you also provide some positives to improve their gaming experience.
