Redbox To Add Blu-ray, But Studios Still Want To Kill It

Redbox has announced that the majority of rental kiosks will have Blu-ray movies by the middle of this year. Citing available space in the rental kiosks, Redbox's parent company, Coinbox, says that Blu-ray is not replacing DVDs, merely supplementing them and taking advantage of the available space.

However, studios like Warner are insistent that Redbox adhere to a strict release window in which Redbox can only rent movies 28 days after their initial release. In exchange, Redbox will gain access to a great selection of Warner's video titles.

Analysts say that this could kill Redbox, since 60% of Redbox revenue, and 45% of Coinbox's revenue, comes from new releases.
