Nintendo DS R4 card now illegal in the UK

Nintendo has won a court victory which will make R4 cards, notorious for allowing pirated games to be played on the DS, illegal.

Unfortunately, the ruling is also a blow for the homebrew movement on the DS, which have been made possible by flash carts like the R4.

Nintendo has promised to add digital game storage to its new DS consoles in the future, to offer a legal alternative to one of the main legal features of the R4. If Nintendo can also provide a legal alternative to homebrew software, perhaps an apps environment like what Apple does with its portable devices, then there will be no other reason for people to want R4 carts, other than for piracy. And this will make Nintendo's position much stronger when faced with criticism of their actions to get R4 banned around the world.

"In the UK alone, there have been over 100,000 game copying devices seized since 2009," Nintendo spoke about the ruling. "Nintendo initiates these actions not only on its own behalf, but also on behalf of over 1,400 video game development companies that depend on legitimate sales of games for their survival."

Is this just the R4 brand or all flash carts?

I have an AceKard and Supercard, and I use them for things like using IRC from anywhere (You can use the DSi's web browser to use a primitive IRC client but it sucks compared to ClIRC)...

I'm not in the UK so it's not too big of a deal for me, just thought I'd ask for clarification. As I don't own an R4 (brand name), those cards suck anyway.

I think the use of R4 is just a shorthand for all flash carts that allow pirated games to be played on the DS. If the cart doesn't allow pirated games to be played, then it should be fine.

        Oh OK

Yeah, the AceKard and Supercard let you play DS ROMs as well. The only one I know of that doesn't allow for piracy is the iPlayer, which is more expensive than the AceKards, go figure...
